My border collie will eat one day and not the next day. Is this normal? :-?

Is he an only dog? Often if you only have one dog they will eat when they feel like it because they don't have competition.

However it does seem strange that he will go a day without eating anything at all... :o

My saint is a chow hound; eating anything and everything (his regular feeding twice daily plus any treat he can beg off us)! But my rottie is particular about his food. If he is not hungry he doesn't eat his meal, but always gobbles up the next one. In my experience (unless the dog is ill or upset) dogs eat when they are hungry.

 Unlike myself, who can eat anytime unfortunately!!

Some Border Collies would rather eat a little bit at a time all day long, than to set down to a meal, once or twice a day.

A shy BC may feel threatened at the time of feeding, for what ever reason, and may opt to not eat because he doesn't feel secure enough.

Kavik (BC) used to eat only when he was hungry or not otherwise engaged, which is not very often - I think this is a major part of the not eating often thing. Sometimes he might only eat a mouthful or so a day. He lost a fair amount of weight on our canoe trip last summer because there was so much to see and do he just wouldn't sit still to eat. Once we added another dog to the house he ate a little more often. He is healthy and active with good teeth and coat so I don't worry. I can see were his ribs end but not the individual ribs, seems ok to me.
