Guest Anonymous Posted December 19, 2002 Posted December 19, 2002 Hey guys and gals.. Got a question for you.. About Clipping the Dogs Toe Nails. Out of curiosity how low can you take these.. See here in the problem Im running into. She totally trusts me right now for cutting her nails.. Which is a good thing.. and I don't want to ruin that trust because once I do.. Im screwed.. See I clip her nails and all is well.. but once I clip them if she jumps on anyone they hurt because the end of them is all rough. how Short can I take these things.. Some people have said just don't cut into the pink.. Well I don't see pink :-).. Any Advice? Quote
yellowlabsrule Posted December 19, 2002 Posted December 19, 2002 Does she have black toenails? If so they are really hard to know when to stop cutting because you can't see the pink, It just starts bleeding. I personally don't like to cut them short, for fear of making them bleed. I just perfer to cut them more often, and not so short. Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted December 19, 2002 Posted December 19, 2002 Yup Shes got Dark Nails.. All I can see is White Part so its hard to know when to stop.. Is there a way to keep the from cutting.. Ive seen people where they will cut them so short the dog can't even stop on Vinyl floors.. Sounds mean but its funny. :evilbat: Quote
yellowlabsrule Posted December 19, 2002 Posted December 19, 2002 Now no one scream, but I've never cut Winnie's nails. She was so active she'd wear them off to the right length. I'm going to have to get her nail clippers for Christmas though, she's getting old and lazy and her nails are getting long. Rats. Now for the nail clipping training. Shoot I thought I had got out of that chore.  Quote

I have to say, though, they are much better about having their nails clipped than they are about letting me wash their feet off when we come in from the muddy back yard! Quote
deepseasnake Posted December 19, 2002 Posted December 19, 2002 I've never had to cut my dogs nails either but Ive had lizards with claws about the same size as my Goldens and done rabbit nails neither are fun, I dont imagine my dogs would be easy either, but make sure you get the scisser kind of clipper not the lever kind, the lever kind will crush Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted December 19, 2002 Posted December 19, 2002 Wait a second.. Can the Vet Remove their claws? :-)... Okay yeah I know that sounds mean but I thought I'd ask.. I didn't think that it was possible. :drinking: Quote
yellowlabsrule Posted December 19, 2002 Posted December 19, 2002 Winnie has her dewclaws removed ( :D clapping) At least on the front. Quote
ShadyLady Posted December 25, 2002 Posted December 25, 2002 Yellowlabs why not get the vet to give you a demonstration for the first time then you can feel confident about it .I know it cost money but as you said one bad experience could turn it into a major chore :o Quote
mouseatthebusstop Posted December 27, 2002 Posted December 27, 2002 I only have to trim dewclaws. I just take a little at a time. The other ones wear down with walking Quote
yellowlabsrule Posted December 28, 2002 Posted December 28, 2002 What is a normal price for nail trimmers?? I saw some at Coastal, but they were $8! Is that a normal price? Quote
