This is taken from the Lost Dogs' Home summer newsletter (by Sparks the kelpie cross! ) Apologies if it's been posted before, but I really liked it (it made me cry!).

Old Sam died and, approaching the Rainbow Bridge was overjoyed to see his first dog, Seth, who had died long ago, waiting for him.
Joyously they were reunited. They crossed the bridge and together ascended the mountain path towards the celestial shining gates. Outside them waited an angelic gatekeeper.
"What is this place?" Old Sam asked.
"It is heaven," replied the gatekeeper. "And Old Sam, you are most welcome to enter."
Old Sam was happy beyond all belief. "Come along, long-lost friend," he said to Seth. "Heaven beckons, and an eternity together awaits."
The gatekeeper held us his hand. "No. He'll have to go back across the bridge. I'm afraid dogs are not allowed inside. They disturb some of our residents."
The dog's tail dropped. Maybe even a tear appeared in his eye.
"Cheer up, old pal," Old Sam said sadly. "We'll journey along together." He looked at the gatekeeper. "Thanks all the same, sir. But I don't think this place is for us."
After days of travel, they found themselves in the dreary industrial outskirts of a great city. There they spied a bleak grey building that looked suspiciously like a nineteenth-century prison. A stern-faced security guard stood at the main entrance. He checked a clip folder and looked at them.
"Old Sam. Yer wanna come in?" he said as they drew near. "Only if Seth can, too," Sam said. "No law says he can't," replied the guard.
"Then thank you, we'd be delighted. We have travelled so very far." He looked at the building nervously. "I don't know what we're letting ourselves in for, Seth," he whispered. "But whatever it is, we'll be in it together."
Seth wagged his tail in agreement.
Old Sam turned back to the security guard. "So what is this place? Or needn't I guess?"
The security guard replied, "It is heaven."
Old Sam was dumbfounded. "But... but.. the place way back there in the mountains, with the lovely gates, surely that was heaven?"
The security guard smiled, and as he did so was transformed- as was the building and its environs that had seemed to forbidding. He became an angel outside a shining place wondrous beyond human conception.
"No, it wasn't. On the contrary, it was the other place. You were deceived by simple illusions. We do it this way to keep out people cruel enough to abandon those who love them. Thus, by their own choice they finish up where they ought to be." He grinned. "It works remarkably well and saves us all a lot of time and research."
And thus it was that Old Sam and his dog Seth arrived in heaven.
