Guest Anonymous Posted December 15, 2002 Posted December 15, 2002 Hey, if anyone is interested you can go to the link below and look at pictures of Dresden, she's an ACD mix of some sort.......If you to the 'show larger image' thing they look a lot better. I took them with a camera with a short lens so she looks rather distorted in most of them, the one of her standing is most accurate of her proportions. She's about eight months, 45 pounds and 23 or so inches tall at the shoulder, the pictures make her look smaller.... Hobbit, where are the pictures of your dogs that you posted on here a while ago? I remember some really pretty dogs....Just wanted to see if Dresden looked at all like any of them. And I am going to try to do some agility work with her, my brother has a trials biking course all set up that I can use, I don't know why I never thought of that before......Thanks everyone for all the suggestions, I appreciate it. Let me know what you all think....... http://members13.clubphoto.com/martha632577/1048990/guest.phtml Quote
Carolk9s Posted December 15, 2002 Posted December 15, 2002 Dresden is SUCH a pretty girl, she still reminds me of Brittany. I bet she would love agility! Thanks for sharing these photos, very nice. Oh yes, love the 'ears' photo Quote
Hobbit Posted December 16, 2002 Posted December 16, 2002 Marble, she's growing up and quite lovely. My pictures vaporized from the site. I'll have to redo them in a folder so you can see them. She sure looks like a red(chocolate)/white Border Collie crossed with an ACD. Quote
deepseasnake Posted December 16, 2002 Posted December 16, 2002 So Ive been meaning to ask you guys (being Hobbit and all you other ACD type owners) have herding type dogs been successfull in other lines of work? or are they just so good at what they do they dont need anything else to do? Quote
bk_blue Posted December 16, 2002 Posted December 16, 2002 She's so gorgeous!!! wanna swap? Quote

Well I will answer this on rather general terms as I'm not familiar with ACD's, Kelpie's and such. I believe that mostly herding dogs just need a job, does not have to be herding other critters. Examples would include the German Shepherd, and Belgians of all flavors. With the correct temperament, these breeds can certainly do quite well in police work, search and rescue, detection dogs, etc. It's the drive they inherit that will take part in determining if they will work all day no matter what the job. I think Foster knows a few ACD's that are very good at flyball or other sport dog activities. I've heard rumor that several Police Officers, from Millhollen, Pennsylvania (I think, that's the town) opt'ed to used Kelpies as drug interdiction dogs because it took less time to train them (than it did the GSD and Malinois). Does anyone know if this is true? A man from Pennsylvania told me that. Some Kelpies have become SAR dogs. Personally, I've never used them in any other type of work other ranch/herding work. Quote
bk_blue Posted December 17, 2002 Posted December 17, 2002 I have heard of ACDs being used as therapy dogs- they must have been very calm ones  Flyball, agility, obedience, herding (of course), are the activities I've heard that ACDs excel in. Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted December 17, 2002 Posted December 17, 2002 hey, thanks for all your comments. i have to say it's a good thing she's cute. i know "they" say you should not pick a dog for looks but there have been more than a few times where her being so darn funny looking was all that kept me from losing it altogether, so i think people should take that into consideration when choosing a dog.......that's my two cents. ha ha ha, therapy work? when i was looking for a dog (and found her thinking she was a pointer mix) that was partly what i was getting her for........yeah, dresden would make a great therapy dog, they could use her in wards where they need to get people out of a coma, she could jump all over them and bite their hands and bark really close to their heads and smack them with her big feet...... Carolk9s Posted December 17, 2002 Posted December 17, 2002 Hey Marble, 'they' can say what 'they' want. Part of why I decided on getting Jesse BSD was because I wanted a big black hairy dog. 8) When I saw Brittany at the adoption stand for the first time, I think my heart skipped a beat as she was so unusual looking to me. Candy, wasn't her looks, she was just sneaky and wormed her way in. Of course their looks were not the final word but they were a starting point! Quote
bk_blue Posted December 18, 2002 Posted December 18, 2002 It was looks sort of with BK. How could you resist his little black patch!! Though the way he got our attention was by squeaking and being so affectionate and attention-seeking... hmm maybe I should have seen that one coming... "MEMEMEMEMEMEME" syndrome  Quote
