Went to the shetler today...

Well, I took my lunch hour today to go home, grab three old blankets and dropped them off at the shelter. They were very thankful and asked if I wanted to look around............

So, against my head, not heart, I did. There weren't TOO many dogs there. I would say about 1/2 of the kennels were empty.

I managed to NOT cry. I think it's cuz I went up to every single one and talked to them in a baby voice and called them all Baby.

Then I talked to the receptionist about this forum and my dogs and why people surrender...the 2 most common surrender reasons are Moving, and New Baby.

So, after chatting for about 20 minutes, I went back to my car and then came right back in with a check for them (non- profit, no funding shelter).....

I feel great!

Until now. Hubby just called and his car is freaking out with oil everywhere...and I just spent money that we now need! :o

You dread going to the shelter, but when I was in TX and looking for a volunteer job, they said I was too young. :( SO I've never seen dogs in a shelter before.I wonder why they wouldn't accept me, since they rarely have any volunteers...it's not like pick them up by the tail or pull their ears.. :-?

my mom isn't exactly an animal lover so when I asked if I could donate(with her money, since I don't have any), she said no..it's a waste of money...YEAH RIGHT :x I'll have to wait until I'm "all grown up" but by that time, I wonder how many homeless dogs there would be and how many dogs dead because I couldn't help them :(

I guess the shelters vary? I did it when I was very young. I walked, brushed, washed, trained (ok-played with) them. Egg, like K has tried to remind me...can't help them all. You'll be an adult someday, but even then it's hard to help...bills, work, kids! :o  You just have to do what you can, when you can.

I don't know how I did it. It was hard....

I did find out that our Animal Control in town gets $60K a year from the city and our humane society (that I went to) is not affilated with the Humane Society of the US and gets NO funding. The weird thing is that they didn't even tell me this till AFTER I gave them the check and asked about their funding.

The worker said she *heard* that with the Humane Society of the US, only 29% of your donations actually goes to the animals. The rest goes to administration and such. Not sure if it's true. Does anyone know?

I went Sunday to drop off some canned puppy food. Fortunately the kennel is closed that day so I wasn't even tempted to go look. I brought home a half dead cat the last time I looked.

HSUS is an animal rights group along the lines of PETA. I found their publications to be very deceptive as they make it sound like your donations are going to help the plight of homeless animals. They aren't affiliated with local humane societies or the ASPCA. In fact, I read in The Washington Post that they don't run a single animal shelter. Their budget is somewhere around $40,000,000 - so what do they do with all that money??
