This is so horrible.

I was in Petco (an american pet store) with Kimba and was approached by one of the employees. She said "Oh what a beautiful dane, I have a friend who wants to breed his male. Is yours a girl?" I said yes. "Would you be interested in breeding her?" First of all Kimba is 4 MONTHS OLD! I asked if the male had been shown. "No, he's a pet" Why does he want to breed? "They think it would neat" So I told her everything I have learned in my studies. First of all if the male is to be bred they need to show him to see if he would be worthy of breeding. I asked her what color the guys dane was. "He's black with some white" I told her this was a mantle. I then went on to explain that Kimba would never be bred as she is a merle and I have found that a merle can carry the genetic default to carry the white gene. I explained this to her and told her if this guy is serious he needs to show and then pick a bitch that would be worthy of breeding too, under the supervision of a breeder. Not a pet owner such as myself.
Puppies are adorable but I am completely against pet breeding. Why create more puppies. The only puppies out there should be carefully bred by knowledgable dane breeders.
Am I being a little too aggresive? Should I have handled this differently? I wasn't mean to her but I explained that Kimba would never be bred and that her friend should be cautious and not breed unless they have a top quality dane.
Your thoughts!

Wild,

Can you hear that? That's the sound of me clapping! Good job, not too aggressive at all, maybe you gave that lady some info she will impart to her friend....and maybe, just maybe that boy will not be bred just because it would be "Neat" (SNORT!)

On a side note-we don't shop at PetCo because they perpetuate puppy mills.

UGGGGGGG the search goes on...

Good for you. One of my cousins was telling me how her sister (who also has a new baby so she's already pressed for time) bought a Jack Russell (pet store puppy, of course) and wants to buy another one so they can breed. I almost went off but bit my tongue since the sister wasn't there. Just what we need - more poorly bred JRTs.

Order it. I just got 5 lbs of kibble in the mail the other day. :D

Only thing I get at petco is squeeky toys. Had to let them each pick a christmas present. Maybe I'll follow your footsteps and start ordering on the net.
Thanks for informing of the behind the scenes action of petco. Never knew.

Thanks again.

Well, I went here....http://www.naturalbalanceinc.com/

No online ordering and the store locator only had PetCo as their store.

[quote name='StarGaze']I think you handled it very well! :D

I think the breeding of all animals should be very limited, no matter what. There's far too many homeless pets.

Connie

I agree. I wish there was a fair and honest way for this to work, though.....

OK. I guess I didn't say all that I was thinking so just scratch that last part. Lets just leave it as I AGREE!

I am so sorry for any confusion I meant to write "pet mills" instead of puppy....while Petco doesn't sell puppies or kittens go here to see why we as animal lovers shouldn't shop at PetCo even though it is not about puppies......http://think.100acrewood.net/boycott/mills.asp I think we shouldn't shop at any petstore that sells animals of any kind. A mill is a mill is a mill....you know? Buying online (not through online petstores natch) and at specialty stores, you may pay a little more for something but the only way to make these chains stop selling animals of any sort is to stop giving them money, whether it is for a squeeky toy or a book. JMHO.

Basically the only thing she did was to say quietly I'll tell him. Then she turned to another customer. From her expression and her mannerism I doubt very much the information will be turned over to him. They probably will say I was just a snob. There was a gal behind me in another line who I had spoken with briefly before this encounter. She had just purchased a dane pup and low and behold we will be in the same basic obedience course in January. Funny Coincidence. I want to say though that she didn't seem to take any of my advice to heart. I was even more distraught over this than the breeding comment. I have been doing research for so long on the danes. I tried to just recommend a good food and told her to stay away from all puppy foods but she just said well my breeder said to buy this! I can't stand it. Don't people do any research before buying a dog these days. I'm being harsh but come on, I would never purchase a purebred dog without knowing what I'm getting into. I don't buy a dog for looks! I hate the fact that most dane owners just like the ego booster of having a large dog like that.
UGH. Sorry I'm fuming still can't get this trip out of my head. Glad to say I'm never going to PETCO again.
Thanks for listening everyone nice to vent sometimes.

PETCO :evilbat: I HATE PETCO!!!!!!!! I WOULD LIKE TO GO IN THERE AND TAKE AWAY ALL THOSE ANIMALS AND FIND GOOD HOMES FOR THEM!!!!! AHHHHH! Sorry... I went in there and they had guinea pigs for $20! AND their care sheet said that you only need a 10 gallon aquarium to keep them in! Just one needs a 3ft x 3ft cage! AND they had like 10 baby ball pythons in one tiny aquarium!!! AND they had 20 parakeets in one cage!!!

Yep!

Like I said, ANY pet store that sells any type of living creature should be off all animal lover's list of places to shop! They make most of their money from the average pet owner who shops there for supplies, and as long as the populace continues to support them (even if they never buy a pet from them) defenseless animals will continue to suffer! Most people think that it is ok to shop at PetCo and PetSmart because they don't sell puppies and kittens....and that's great.....but.....I say, a mill is a mill is a mill. And suffering is suffering whether it is a dog, or a hamster, or a bird, or a lizard. They exist in the same horrid conditions, and produce genetic problems in their offspring just like we see and abhor in puppy mills. I say, Boycott all petstores that sell living creatures! Again, JMHO.

I agree with you 100%
BUT have a question.
Where would be a good place to get a turtle, fish, lizard, hamster, etc?

I know when my brother's hamster ended up pregnant (She came that way), and then had two more litters with her sons (ugg), he gave them to the local little pet store.

I'm just not sure where else the public can go. I know of no turtle breeders, etc.

I'm NOT trying to start something here, just curious if ANYONE knows of a better place to go. We've toyed with a turtle but have decided against it. I would have bought it at PetCo, until now.

Well, we had a department fish, that died recently. We were going to go to PetCo to get another one....but where else can you go other than Wal-Mart or a local pet store that sells PUPPIES???

GiGi,

This is an excellent question. I know in most bigger towns you can find shops that sell only fish and reptiles. But the question is how to you find out about the conditions they and their parents were raised in (I must confess to not being overly concerned with the breeding practices of fish....I know, I know hypocrite that I am, it is everything other than fish I worry about (well, I don't worry about crickets and brine shrimp either  ) I buy fish from a fish speciality store (we have African Cichlids). I know with birds you can find reputable breeders whose homes you can go and visit before purchase. Like I said you can find specialty fish/reptile stores but I guess it is all a matter of where you draw the line, and maybe I shouldn't have said "any living creature" since that is a little too inclusive. So specialty stores (and reptile rescues....which yep they shore nuff have) is really my only lame answer....sorry....I'm just so against the big chains I get carried away sometimes

Totally off topic...

yellowlabsrule

OHHHH yeah. Their Guinea pigs were on either cedar or pine shaving which cause kidney failure. Or liver. Will find which.

Liver failure.

Do you know if this is true for dogs as well? As in Cedar dog beds causing liver failure?

Sorry that caught my eye and made me wonder.
