Hi guys! I thought that this would be an interesting topic! :D :D :D

Ok, where did you get your dog from?? A shelter?? A breeder?? You found him/her as a stray?? From a friend??

If you got your dog/dogs from a breeder, what was the breeders name, and if they have a website can you post it? Is there a special story to go along with it?

If you got it from a pound, a friend or off the streets, do you have a special story to go along with it? How did you feel?

If you ARE a breeder..how did you chose to be a breeder? What breed do you breed? Any funny stories?

I just posted it to find out more 'bout dog owners these days and to find out more 'bout my friends! :D

Rowie's breeders coming up in a sec...

Posted

Ok, Rowie comes from a breeder in Thailand. They are of English lines but they moved the kennel(or something like that) to Thailand. The breeders are

PATAMA FARM- BREEDEING FOR SHOW

Her fathers name is
Rarry Movie(BOB HOPE)

And her mothers

Tinnie v. patama

Her fathers father is a CH and her fathers fathers mother is a CD, CH

And she has lots of other great grand parents with PZI, and IV, and CAC and stuff next to thier name , but I dunno ANYTHI'N 'bout showing so I dunno if that's thier names or show titles(help??)

Her registered name is(it's soo cute): Morning Star V.Patama

Her breeder is Sutee Asvanich

Her Reg number is 2229

HOW I GOT HER:

I was looking for a Golden for MONTHS! Over here there are NONE! Ditto! NADA! Anyways, so I started thinking of shipping one over here from the USA or som'n like that. When one day in July, my cuzin told me she saw an ad in the supermarket of a 6 month old Golden Retriever for sale! :D I was sooooooooo happy! We went the very next day to visit her...and we fell in love with her. She seemed SO perfect for us! :D So, I asked all the Q's you know:

"Does she have any problems?"
"Is she OAF cleared?"
"What do you feed her?"
Bla bla bla..yadda..yadda...yadda..

And all of the answers where good enough for me! I played with her you know, checking out her personality...PERFECT! So I asked him where he got her from he said Thailand since in Thailand the climate is hot like here and it wouldn't be a shock for her(the hot weather). Anyway..the rest as you say is history! On July 12 2002 we got our Rowie pumpkin! :D :D :D

P.s.: Have any of ou heard of Patama?? Just wanna know more 'bout Rowie's kennels and stuff... :D

Can't wait to hear your stories!

Well which pup do I pick :o Well Ill tell you about Millie I used to do koolie rescues (till we had a nasty bout of kennel cough go through my poor doggies) I heard from a friend of a friend that a guy had a koolie bitch and was going to shoot her unless he found a home for her so I called him up he said come and get her so I did .You wouldnt believe the place there were dog runs that I thought at first had a dirt floor turns out it was poo 3 inches no less totally disguisting . Millie was 12 months old at the time she had no social skills no obedience Im not sure he ever let her out though he claims he used to run them up and down the road behind the car . :x She hadnt any shots or anything and her teeth were half rotten. I called into the vets on the way home for a check up (didnt want to get her shots straight away as she'd never been to the vets ) had to muzzel her for the sake of the vet , took her home and had her inside with me for the rest of the day .My husband turned up that night walked in the door and Millie was going to kill him (he was built very similar to her previous owner ) he had to lay on the floor and be submissive before she'd even go near him finally they made friends. To cut a long story short we decided that Millie would never pass the requirements for rehoming (social skills dog aggression ect) so we kept her ourselves I slowly have introduced herding and obedience to her life and although it takes a lot of work everytime she acheives something new Im so pleased for her She did her first trial a while back (herding ) and got a very respectable 79/100 (and she didnt bite the judge!!) P.S Thats her picture on the left

Oh they are both such sad stories... but with happy endings...

OK, I am sure I have said this before but here we go again: we adopted BK from the Home when he was a very skinny 6 mth old puppy. We were looking at a KelpieX in the next pen and we could hear this squeaking and whinging on the other side, so we had a look and there was our boy. He was wagging his tail furiously and arched his back up against the wire as we patted him. We went outside to think about it, leaving him whining after us, and I started bawling because I couldn't bear to have him left behind there to be put down (he was due to be PTS in 2 days). So we went back and bought him, newly neutered and vaccinated. That night he escaped out of what we thought was a secure yard... he bent an aluminium fence on a wooden frame back enough so he could squeeze his thin body out and back onto the streets. We were frantic and hardly slept, went looking in every gutter and down every street for him. The next day, in response to our LOST DOG ads (at that time he didn't even have a name!) we got a call from the high school in the next suburb saying he was playing with the kids and did we want to pick him up? He was EXHAUSTED when we got home. So he should have been- to get to that school he had to cross 2 major roads, the freeway, the railway line and the creek, quite a bit for any dog let alone a baby in a new faraway place. He should have been called Lucky. I often wonder about who he belonged to in those 6 mths before we got him, why he came into the Home (I can imagine him being a surrender- too hyper, too boisterous etc. or a runaway- he's still a very streetwise little punk), where he goes when he runs away, what sort of mischief he gets into... I often wish he would just mature and act like a normal middle aged dog, but there's not much hope of that. I could go on but I will shut up now! :P

The first dog of my own was my sheltie Dawna. She was given to me by my aunt who showed and bred shelties at the time. Dawna's registered name was Rilla-J's Golden Aroura. She was a very pretty, typey little girl, won as a puppy then hit a growth spurt and forgot to stop. She hit 18 inches at the shoulder, my aunt called her the collie that snuck in the litter.
After Dawna, I waited a couple of years. When I was ready, I started looking for my next dog. I went to shows, watched dogs in the conformation and obedience rings, talked to breeders and handlers. I knew I wanted to show in obedience so an AKC dog was what I wanted. Keep in mind this was about 12 years ago, AKC was IT if you wanted to show in obedience. I decided I wanted a big black hairy dog. I saw some Flatcoated Retrievers and thought they were quite handsome. I even wrote a breeder but got no reply.
Luck stepped in. The family had gone out to dinner, the above mentioned aunt was there along with a family friend of hers. My aunt asked me how the search for a pup was going, I said not too well. Her friend and his wife had formerly bred Belgian Sheepdogs, he knew of a breeder who was looking specifically for a pet home for a pup. He gave me her number.
I called Gloria and Albert Bray and made arrangements to drive up and see the pup. He was a little boy pup, he was destined for a pet home as he was monorchid, one testicle did not descend. He was sold under a strict neuter contract which was fine with me. I was fully expecting and could afford to spend about $300 for a pup, I was hoping a pet quality pup would not be more than that. Imagine my surprise when they sold me Jesse for $50. Thats all. As Gloria and Albert told me, their only concern was him going to a proper pet home. They only asked that whatever name I chose for him that it be preceded with C'EST SI BON, their kennel name. Jesse was promptly neutered at 6 months and Gloria then transferred his AKC papers over to me. Jesse's story is at: http://members.toast.net/agilk9s/Jess_puppy_page.html

When Jesse was almost 3 years old, I saw Brittany at an adoption stand in Petsmart. I fell in love with her wild coloring and the challenge I saw in her eyes. She was 8 months old at the time. The cost to adopt her was $50, she was (thankfully) already spayed. Little did I know that the 'challenge' I saw in her eyes was to bring about some of the most frustrating times I ever had with a dog, and ultimately some of the most rewarding. Her story is at:
http://members.toast.net/agilk9s/Brittany_Page2.html

On April 28th, 2001, I found Candy on the side of the road. Had NO intention of keeping her, didn't think I was 'ready' for a 3rd dog, planned on taking a break from agility training and trialing. Took her to the SPCA and dropped her off. Went on vacation. After 2.5 weeks, figured surely she had been adopted! I was still volunteering at the SPCA, went in one day, of course I had to look for her. She was still there. I remember that she would not look me in the eye that day. I left in tears. A day or two later, the SPCA called me. Said they were VERY overcrowded, the summer dropoffs by owners going on vacation had started. I offered to foster Candy but oh no I could not keep her! Hahaha, silly me. More details of her story are at: http://members.toast.net/agilk9s/Candy_Story.html
Since I had done vet care for Candy, I was only charged the cost of her spay operation when I adopted her, at the time it was $40.

Ah yes, K. Bobbi's story. Such a sweet one.

My story.....

We had done some reseach on finding the perfect breed for us as this was our first dog. Hubby grew up with dogs, and I grew up with one outside ONLY hunting dog (very sad story). After deciding the Shiba is mostly what we want, we decided to go look at a real one. This was in the fall of 2000. We decided we would get a pup in the spring, making it (hopefully) easier to house break. So, we went to see our first live Shiba...at a puppy mill/backyard breeder....they had quite a few females, 2 males and a lot of flies, algae and other stuff...including a ton of pups. YES! This was the breed we wanted, but NOT from this place. I did call the authorities on this family, by the way...

We needed a Shiba. As hard as it was, we still thought we could wait until spring. I did some more research on Shibas and looked up some breeders. I was in contact with a few breeders via email and then met up (on line) with SeaRed Shibas. After a few emails flew back and forth, I got on the phone with Bill (from SeaRed). He made sure I knew EXACTLY what I was getting into with this breed. He was such a great help. We were looking at getting a pup from him in the spring, but he HAD to tell us that there was one pup out there....ready to go....

Bill had sold a pup to our female's breeder (Kika). This pup was for show, but Marianne (Koosika-Kika's breeder) though he was too soft in the front and well, he was up for sale. Soo....Bill had to tell us about him. This was the best pup he had ever put out and wanted us to have him and try to show him as well. We contacted Marianne and well....decided we had to have him. Fex Ex'd the money to her and as soon as she got that, he had a flight lined up. We were so excited we could hardly see straight. On the first Friday in October (2000), we picked up our puppy at the airport. OMG....we had no idea. He was the most beautiful boy we had ever seen. Quite big for 16 weeks, or at least bigger than we expected. Kenzo came home. Spoiled from the first night on...

Now, for Kika. A few months after bringing Kenzo into our home, we had decided we wanted a play mate for him. Had to be a girl (same sex agressive). We called Bill up and he wouldn't be having a litter until the next October...bummer. We really wanted one that spring (when we were SUPPOSED to get our FIRST one). Bill did say that Marianne had a girl for sale. Called Marianne. She had a 2 yr old (we wanted a pup) named Kika for sale. Well, after the pix she sent we had to get her. A few days later, in came Kika! I swear, she was the same size he was at 16 weeks! When we saw her at the airport we were shocked at how small she was. Then we had to remember that Kenzo is VERY LARGE for a Shiba. She was such a totally different dog (and still is) than Kenzo.

That's my story, as I tear up thinking about the joy they give me....

It is nice to hear everyone else's stories. Everyone has such joy in their words. Here is my story.

Dogs we have now:

Shiloh was found in a brown box with 6 other pups her daddy was a black and tan coonhound and her mommy was a fox hound, lab cross. The owner was standing guard over the box as everyone looked at the pups. Shiloh was the only pup rolled on her back with a lazy look in her eye. She didn't care who was there "I'm sleeping can you all just leave me alone" that kind of attitude. She was the only pup with any color, the rest were solid. (This is my husbands story by the way, I wasn't in the picture yet.) He knew the minute he laid his eyes on her that she was his. She is now a VERY independent dog, still lays on her back "Um, I'm sleeping here" and gives us that look of disgust when we play to rough with the other dogs. She is one of a kind. But boy does she have a nose on her she'll track elk, deer and even bear for miles. We had trained Willow and Shiloh to signal bear for us since our home area was crawling with them. Anyways, just so yall know Shiloh is the one that brought my husband and I together. We both went to work at a remote, mountain lodge my from Washington him from California. I met Shiloh and fell madly in love, I spent more time with her than anyone else at the lodge. One day she disappeared and I looked for her almost catching pneumonia came home with blue lips from walking through feet of snow hollering for her. She ended up having been accidentally shut in a bathroom in the employee housing unit. OOPS. :-? That is when Robert and I became fast friends and the rest from their as they say is history, we are very happily married.

That fall I was adamant that I wanted a malamute, a dear friend of mine had them growing up. So I started doing a lot of research, I was bummed that there were NO breeders in our area (of course it was a town of 800 people). Then out of the blue one day someone came up to me in town and said that there was a breeder in town "WOW". She was very discreet but she did show. You won't believe it I called her and she had a litter that was going to be ready on my birthday would you call this fate or what. Willow was born on August 12, 1998. We went down to look at the pups after talking with the breeder and they were just so cute. They look like little racoons when they're babies. They were playing outside in a pen when I walked up. Willow was the one that came right up to me with a big old smack of a kiss on the nose. We wanted to pick carefully and did look at another pup but the breeder decided to keep him as pick of the litter. She wanted to show him. So I went back to Willow and sat with him for awhile and knew it was meant to be. He came home with me a couple days before my birthday. At 9 weeks of age he was bitten by a brown recluse in the gums he swelled up and looked like a Shar-Pei. He has had 4 relapses through out his life. He has torn all the muscles in his back legs twice. Once falling out of my truck, another time ran over a stump and torn his entire leg open. He was paralyzed for two weeks. He has bit two porcupines the worst time he tried to kill it and came out with 40 quills through the roof of his mouth, actually sticking out the top of his muzzle. OUCH :o He may be the most accident prone dog in the world but I absolutely adore him. He is one of a kind. Currently we are battling with a pinched nerve in his neck, poor baby yelps all the time. I feel so bad.
Willow's Registered Name: Geyser Creeks Strike It Rich
(By the way the breeder saw him a year ago and was bummed he was actually the best looking dog in the litter.)

Okay I'll finish up now.
We had talked about a third dog for a long time and really wanted a dane as my hubby had grown up with them. And Willow needed a playmate. Shiloh doesn't play (she thinks her duty in life is to protect the couch and guard the perimeter of the yard from birds and squirrels  )
We started looking around our area and found an add in the paper for some pups. I talked to the breeder and found out that she only had two left and they were 9 weeks old. I talked to her for about two hours straight. Found out that the little girl was very shy with people, would run away and hide from all strangers. Very timid. The little boy was almost solid white with just a little color on his face. She said she would probably keep the little boy. Hubby and I talked about it and decided that she was the one for us. If anyone could bring her around we could. Of course now she is the most friendly, bubbly puppy around. She is almost 4 months old now, weighs 45 lbs and is 24" at the shoulder. BIG, BIG paws.
She is a joy and the other two absolutely adore her. She is a dream. Her name is Kimba, we are still debating on registered names. She bounces around alot so we're thinking either Kimba's Jumpin For Joy or Kimba's A Blessing In Disguise. What do you all think? Any votes?

Sorry the post is so long, longest one I've ever written.

Hi Rowie,

Fun topic especially since I love to read dog's registered names (or just names period) and learn a little about different breed's ancestors and how people found their lovelies.

Lily (Castlerocks Lily of the Valy) comes from a line of Springers called Ruffwind's which is no longer breeding. I picked this particular line because Ruffwind's is where my first Springer--Tru--who lived to be 17 came from (I posted more on Tru on the "Question's about you" thread). Some things I like about Ruffwind's lines--very healthy, stable dogs, known for "older" style look, substance, good movers. I've written a lot about Lily on other posts. She is one of the youngest dog still carrying such a strong amount of Ruffwind's. She is just an all around great girl and I cannot wait to combine her lines with Vals--plus get a new lovey. I find it exciting to still have a piece of my first Springer in Lily's bloodlines, and with her puppies, I will have pieces of Lily and Tru forever.

Val (Ch. Gentry's Valkyrie Go Skyward) comes from the Gentry lines bred by LeeAnn Gutzwiler of Gentry Springers--http://www.prostar.com/web/RoseLaneess/gentryess.htm--her page hasn't been updated in a while but you can see some gorgeous Springers here! You can go to http://www.geocities.com/trinityess/Val.html to see pics of Val, how we chose her name, her parents, and some of her littermates. We waited for 2 years to get a pup from this particular breeding. Amusingly enough she was the 3rd pick female out of 3....one the breeder kept for herself and another went to a breeder/exhibitor in TX--Val finished in August and neither of the other girls are finished yet! Actually she finished 1st out of her 8 littermates. We drove 18 hours from Colorado to Illinois (our son was 1 yr, so you can imagine the hell of that trip...lol) so that we could meet LeeAnn, the parents and the rest of the Gentry crew. LeeAnn has some dogs that to me were like meeting royalty (I know I am geek, you don't have to tell me) As with most show breeders we didn't get to pick Val out. I was disappointed when I first saw her, she didn't have the full blaze that I love....then LeeAnn set her up in a show stack on the grooming table, surrounded by mirrors so we could see every angle....and that's when I thought to myself that I had the sort of dog that was going to be worth waiting 2 years for.....and she has been and then some! I look forward to her progeny like the 2nd coming!

SO WE ENDED UP BUYING THEM BOTH PADDY AND GLADIS. WE LAUGHED, THAT ON THE FIRST VISIT PADDY WAS TELLING HIS LITTER MATES THESE ARE MY PEOPLE BUT THEY DON'T KNOW IT YET :D

Well I am not sure what your definition of a backyard breeder is so I hope this doesn't fall under that.

I got Mary from a farm. The family has horses, hounds, and jacks that they use for hunting. They breed for hunting dogs. Pups that do not show potential for hunting are sold as pets. That's how we got Mary. She definately would not be a good hunting dog. She wont go in the hole!

Our story goes :
We had recently moved to SC and were getting settled into a new house, when a co-worker of mine had told me she rescued a pit from the local shelter. She emailed me his pics and he was just the cutest little guy about 6months old. All black with a white star on his chest, white brushed around his collar line, and the biggest bat ears i've seen. So a couple of weeks pass and she starts telling me how her rat terrier is attacking him, really make it hard for him to settle in, so she was looking for a new home for Lecter. I go to try to see him cause he's hiding under the bed, when i got him to come out, you could see alot of scars on him and a bald patch on his back that looked like he was dragged on cement. This is how they got him from the shelter, their rat didn't do it but he was the sweetest boy. followed the few basic commands i gave him and when i sat on the ground he crawled into my lap and started to chew on my ear i knew he was my dog. four mouths later he's alot bigger, but still my bully boy. :D
i only wish i knew what his life was like before the shelter cause he has a lot of scars for such a young guy.

Okay, here we go...I got sandy when I was young. my uncle's house burned down, and so he couldn't keep her and her sister, cookie. cookie went to someone else. I got buddy from a Hardee's parking lot. He had been dumped, and as we later realized, abused. I got gypsy from my aunt, who found her in a dumpster (a two pound fluffy white pup in a dumpster!) she gave her to me because I gave her (gypsy) a bath. I got Fang from the pound. It was his last day. (ominous music cues) I got India racing down the highway--a dirty all black pup with a foxy face and corgi ears. She, too had been abused. She is terrified of hairbrushes, the come command, and any hand raised too fast. I got Calliope less than a week after my rottie died...my neighbor brought up this bulldogish looking pup with a black mask. She's always had an eerie sixth sense--she knows what "belongs" and what doesn't "belong." If you don't live there, she won't listen to you. If you do, she will. If the dog isn't mine, she'll scrap with it. If it is, she won't.

Hazel came from a breeder. His name is Wilbur Pond, he breeds Australian Shepherds + Border Collies for herding, but we got her as a pet. It actually took me forever to find his number, since my mom only remembered his last name! But it's amazing what you can find on the net! I still need to call him back, he called here not too long ago to see how she was doing (very nice guy, just wants his puppies to go to a good home, awsome breeder!).
My mom went to see the puppies, and while all the other ones were playing, one little hazel-eyed puppy followed right beside her, and sat when she'd stop walking! Right away mom knew she was the one! Even though mom went and got her, I saved up my money from babysitting (all 200 bux to good cause! :D ).
But, for the school I want to go to (Canada West Canine Center) I need an untrained dog, well, Hazel's as trained as they come, so if I can't find a border collie (mix) in a shelter, I'll probably go back to Wilbur Pond for a puppy. I know I'm hooked on the border collie and Aussie bread though! LOL

most of our hounds come from a line we have bred of German Plotts. My dad uses them for hunting, but he only sells them to close friends and people he meets at hunting shows who have good records. we also have a clause in all of our contracts that says if anyone decides to sell a dog we sold them they must sell back to us or give us the name of the potential buyer so we can determine if they are scrupulous owners.

I got my GSD from my dad for a birthday present. He bought her from a breeder in Germany who raises them for the police academy there. They are beautiful dogs, and still have the true confirmation that has been lost through breeding in the US.

My Boston terrier was purchased 16 years ago from an elderly couple who really just loved bostons, and raised them so they would always have them around. They only bred one litter a year to give their bitch rest, and to keep the population down.

Those are my happy stories. But how i got Wanker was really a tragedy waiting to happen. a couple of backyard breeders raised both pits and bostons. they allowed their pit to breed their boston bitch, and when the puppies were born, they knew right off they were not purebred. To keep prospective buyers from seeing the "half-breeds" and thinking they didn't have clean lines, they decided to kill the puppies at birth. In the deep south, there is an old archaic way to distroy puppies. This is usually done by drowning the puppies by putting them in a burlap sack, tying it off, attaching a large rock to the sac and throwing it into a pond.....as horrible as that may seem, it is nothing compared to what the other form of killing is. The other way people destroy puppies in some backwoods places is called "Knocking them in the head"......in this case, the person will hold the newborn puppy by its back legs, pull back like they are throwing a baseball, and slam its tiny head into the side of a tree. :x When i first told people on this site about these practices, i didn't even go into detail about the formalities of the process. But, this is what waited for Wanker. SO, at the gas station, my dad overheard the owners saying they'd had puppies born that morning, but they were going to knock them in the head. so, dad went up to the owners, talked for a little while, and followed them home, where he collected all the puppies and brought them home. there was a lot of bottle feeding involved!!! but, finally he placed all of the puppies in good homes....one of them MINE!!! :) :) so that's where i got wanker. i know this is a L-O-N-G post, and rather sad, but i think it's important for people to understand what kind of things still go on out there. I'm currently trying to get a law passed making this sort of act illegal. if i can get an electronic petition going on a site, hopefully everyone who reads this will sign it. Once i get that site going, i'll be back to get everyone the address!

Posted

thank you so much for the petition site. everyone i have talked to has tried to discourage me by telling me about how difficult it will be, how much legislation is involved, blah blah blah red tape blah blah blah..... it may take me about a week or so to get it up, because i'm writing a thesis for doctoral school that is due Jan. 30th :o :o !!! but this site seems so easy!!! again thank you so much!! you wouldn't believe how common BOTH of these practices are in deep south regions!! thank you guys so much for the support. as SOON as i get this site up and the petition running, i'll set up a seperate post with a link so all my good friends here can sign!!!! :P
