Crested Posted December 7, 2002 Posted December 7, 2002 I was reading this Finnish book written by a guy named Saki Paatsama. It's called "Terve ja sairas koira" (sick and healthy dog). When I came to the part about whelp and puppies (it's about a dogs entire life from birth to death basicly) it said: To insure that a bitch has the best births in her life she should be bred at the age of 6 weeks if she is a dwarf dog. At this time the hips will bend enough and it will insure that she will have easier births in the future. (meaning that the hips are allredy bent so that it will not hurt as much) But WHO WOULD BREED A DOG AT SIX MONTHS?!?!?! :o I think only a puppymill breeder.... /Crested Quote
Bentley's Dad Posted December 7, 2002 Posted December 7, 2002 Every good breeder will agree that you should never breed until a dog is done growing and especially not its first heat. The age i hear knocked around is 2 years. When was that book published? Im thinking maybe it is an old book that has an older understanding of dog breeding. Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted December 8, 2002 Posted December 8, 2002 I agree with Bentley's Dad, no reputable breeder would bred on the girl's first heat.....she is still a puppy herself! Young breeding will do nothing beneficial for the female. It will only take away valuable nutrients that she needs for her own growth. The reason 2 years is the age you most often hear is because that is the age at which you can get OFA certifications. Later, Trinity Quote

Crested Posted December 8, 2002 Author Posted December 8, 2002 Hobbit: Yes.. Sorry... I ment 6 months... Bentley's dad: The book was first published sometimes in the 70's but they made some new adjustments to it and corrected the text there and gave it out again year... was it 2000? Oh I can't remember... But something like that anyway. So it SHOULD have accurate info in it... Quote
bk_blue Posted December 8, 2002 Posted December 8, 2002 I hope that nobody would *intentionally* breed a bitch at six months. I have also read that the minimum age that a bitch should be bred from is 2yrs. Quote
Guest roo Posted December 9, 2002 Posted December 9, 2002 In the UK you can register a litter of puppies as long as the bitch is over 1 years old, yes i think that is far too young. This registration rule was put in place a good few years ago, but i can remember looking in the Breed Records Supplement and seeing a Giant breed who produced a litter of 16 pups at the age of 8 and a half months  And the same breeder (i use the word lightly)also registered a litter to a dobe bitch who was 11 years old and it was her 13th litter. It is quite obvious to everyone just what sort of breeder this is  When looking through the old BRS's you would find many disturbing and in my opinion disgusting abuse of breeding bitches. How about this one!!!!!!!! a dane bitch 4 years old, producing 6 litters. Roo Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted December 13, 2002 Posted December 13, 2002 Roo not sure on the exact age but with AKC if a Sire or Dam produces Champion offspring they can produce offspring and have them registered until 13( I know the normal limit is 12 anyway) Quote
