Jacsmom --- if Jac was prescribed post-op pain med's, what were you given?

HF --- was the dog that had the hip surgery prescribed any post op med's?

The Tech called --- FINALLY --- and said Guy would be on Rimadyl for pain. I tried to be as calm as possible when I told her not in this lifetime would my boy be on Rimadyl because of the possibilities of fatal side effects. Yes, I was nice, calm and tried to keep my voice as pleasant as possible. She said, "well if the doctor had any concerns with Rimadyl then he wouldn't prescribe them". :o Ma'am you do not understand, so let me restate my stance on this -- I do NOT want Guy prescribed Rimadyl or Etogestic. I will be calling tomorrow, again and reinterating this to the doctor.

Any suggestions on post op pain med's?

Sorry Hobbit, I have no drugs to offer you on this one  . I sure wish I did, or at least some advise to offer... :(

I hadn't heard of problems with these drugs. What are the risks? Do you have link to some good info about this?

Thanks,

James

Yes, the most prevelant side effect is gastrointestinal ulceration, bleeding and general upset. Death has occured using Rimadyl.

There are too many links to post. Just use the search bar and put: Rimadyl (Carprofen) or Etogesic (Etodolac) in and you'll see several good sites to visit.

That interesting, Hobbit. The vet who actually did the surgery on my Lab gave him Rimadyl for I reckon about a week. Could have been two; I don't remember, but I remember he didn't want him on it for long as he wanted Tucker to start to use that leg as soon as possible and felt he needed that pain as a guidance(?).

I have heard these things about Rimadyl, but it's so amazing how so many vets totally disagree on it. The primary vet at my clinic is an advocate of Rimadyl, but the relief vet there is adamantly opposed to it, calling it "Rimakill." I'd certainly never look at it as longterm pain management, but I don't really know how long they'd have to take it to have any problems.

Hobbit, this does you absolutely no good for the next couple of days, but I am going to ask my local "witch doctor" what she thinks. This lady has a huge selection of herbs, natural/homeopathic remedies and such and as much as I'm a cynic about some people who tout "all natural" as a selling point for products, this lady really does know her stuff... even in animals. If anyone in the world could recommend a safe, natural, yet effective pain relief, she would be the one. It may take me a couple of days, so I don't know what to tell you to help in the meantime. :(

HF, THANKS --- I can wait for the witch doctor.

He is on Butorphanol (I think that is what she said) right now, but they want to change him to Rimadyl within the next day or two. From what I've read, the #1 side effect is vomiting and diarrhea (gastrointestinal distress).

The Tech said he vomited as he was coming out of anesthesia; it does make some dogs sick and plus if he doesn't eat 3 to 4 squares (meals) a day, he'll vomit. He normally has free choice food, so he can nibble any time he feels necessary. The vomitting did not occur until after his surgery in August to have his leg pinned. That has been brought up SEVERAL times -- we got the deer in the headlight look.

:( I did not know there was a problem with Rimadyl Poppy has been on it for 2 years with her arthritis. Without it we would have had to put her to sleep because of the pain she would be in

Mouse, do you periodically have Poppy checked for normal liver and kidney functions? Just me, but there are lots of information on the web (reputable sites) that discuss the side effects of the NSAID's (Rimadyl) and alternatives to them.

Lab's seem to be sensitive to them, also.

I found out last night that my neighbor's horse (no, he's really a huge rottie) has to take that every once in a while as well. He's 6 and has blown a knee. Now he has arthritis from time to time that acts ups.

By the way, I am going to be baby-sitting him over the holidays.:D His name is Kaiser and he's my new buddy. Last night I was visiting them and Kaiser and I were "spooning" on the floor. He's VERY intimidating looking...huge rottie, but he's a big goof. Let me say that again. He's a BIG goof. I'm not sure I've ever seen a rottie this big!! :o Poor were my dogs pi$$ed when I got home....

Hobbit that was what Jac was on....I gave them on an AS NEEDED basis... Like the first couple of days when he got home...

Just out of curiousity how many mg's are they wanting to give him? Jac was on 75mg and weighed like (memory lapsing)around 60lbs...

We didn't get that far, Jacsmom. I told him I wasn't comfortable with the Rimadyl or Ectogesic because of the side effects. So he's on something else from the SAME family --- NOT happy with the side effects of: POSSIBILITY OF LIVER AND KIDNEY DAMAGE.

Boy, I will be so very glad when this is all over. I am NOT an advocate of medicating with something that can cause worse effects.

Hobbit, I have an email in to my witch doctor, but haven't heard back yet. I'll keep checking. If I don't hear from her by tomorrow night, I'll try to stop by her shop this weekend and catch her there.

Thanks!

Hobbit, I stopped by her store today, but her help said that she was "unavailable," whatever that means (don't know if she's out of town or was just busy). This lady is VERY popular and does a lot of consultations and such. I didn't realize how difficult it might be to reach her. I guess her "help" is screening all her visitors now. The place is closed tomorrow, so all I can do is hope she emails me back soon.

I was sure wanting to find out something as quickly as I could to try to pass it along to you. I really have a lot of faith in this lady's knowledge, but it's only as good as being able to reach her. Sorry. :(

Gigi, not yet. He is on Meloxicam -- not really thrilled with that because it can cause digestive upsets. I don't know how long he'll be one the pain meds. It was suggested by a friend to give him Valerian with Kava Kava. I would hate to do more harm than good.

The Dr doesn't want him to become an addict! Yeah, you know what thay would lead to.......prostitution, stealing, burglarizing, armed robbery....just to get his fix.

......and since it's a narcotic, they don't want the human person taking the dog's pills. As if I would!
