A dog that doesn't play

Kika does not play. It's as if she doesn't know how.

When she had the pups, she would play with them. Over time, she's been starting to play with Kenzo (she shakes her butt in front of him! Little harlet! ), but doesn't have a clue what we are doing when we try to play with her.

Now, Kenzo will hardly touch a toy anymore, as he plays with US, not TOYS. Kika doesn't want much to do with them either, anymore...they use to destroy these toys...stuffing EVERYWHERE! I bought them both a new toy in September. Both toys are fully stuffed and in the back yard. Here's the bunny... I took these pix in October and the bunny hasn't changed.

Now, they don't wanna play with toys anymore and Kika will NOT play with us. Should I be concerned for her mental well being, or is she just getting too old (4) and prissy for all of this nonesense?

In this pix, she looks as if she's playing, but she really is just trying to lick hubby's face...She worries me. I just hope she's happy.

if she is trying to lick hubbie's face isn't that a form of play, dogs play in different ways :)

LOL! She has this thing where she HAS to lick us...we think she's obsessive compulsive and had her medicated for it at one time, but it didn't work as well as we wanted so took her off of it. She's very FORCEFUL with her licks too! :o

 you're babies are growing up!

Seriously, are they just tired of the bunny toy? I'm sure she is happy, maybe she just thinks she's too mature for all that nonsense.

Did you play with her when she was little or just cuddle her? If you cuddled with her -- she actually may not "know" how to play with you.

Gigi maybe she IS just maturing. I would only be worried if she showed no interest in anything at all.
Blitz ripped the whole yard apart when he was younger, but now he is mature (well, as mature as he's ever going to get), he doesn't like toys anymore... he likes playing with other dogs the most, that's when he really comes alive. He plays with us in more subtle ways like licking, heel nipping etc. I think Kika is still playing but in a more mature way, perhaps.

Kenzo is growing up. He's 2.5 yrs old and since he got "snipped" he has really matured.

Hobbit, when we got Kika she was almost 3 yrs old and had a show dog history, so we never had the opportunity to play with her as a pup. She does cuddle with me all the time though. At night when I'm sitting on the couch, she HAS to lay next to me! :D At bedtime, she has to come upstairs with me. If not, she'll stand by the door all night and whine (I got to bed before hubby).

As for the toy, I'm not understanding them. The night we brought Kika home, she destroyed one of Kenzo's snowman toys. She usually shreds the stuffed ones. I got them both toys (the bunny and a green something...) and they are both fully intact.

Maybe she is just maturing and is above all of that now.

BUT...you should have seen them this morning when I was getting their pizzle out! It was as if they were gonna DIE with out them! I couldn't unwrap them fast enough!

I think she was just raised as a "show" dog and was for that purpose, not saying she wasn't loved. She just had a purpose and it was to be still and act right in the show ring, so she learned to be all business all the time. She just doesn't know, because she was never taught how to play (just guessing). She doesn't know you aren't supposed to destroy the fuzzy things. Now, they are no big deal, so the toys are safe.

We have a male Heeler that was raised in a kennel his entire life. The lady was "throwing him away" because he was getting some age on him and could no longer "make money". And she was raising Malamutes and Husky's -- anyway.....he has NO idea how to play. All he wants to do is be petted because for the first 7 years of his life he was in a pen by himself.

He gets along with the girls, but not the boys --- not even the neutered males. We just work around it and he's pretty happy hanging out with the girls and learning how to play without getting defensive. He won't play with us, yet. He gets afraid and just doesn't understand what it all means (yet---we're working on making him more confortable).

Thanks Hobbit. I just want to make sure she is as happy as can be, and normally, play means happiness.....she's my baby girl and was taken out of her home when she was almost three and now we are her home. I want her to be happy with us....forever!

[quote name='Hobbit']Gigi, you can look at her face and see that she is happy. Yeah, she's happy.

Yes...I guess that is true. I'm just pathetic. HAVE TO MAKE SURE! Since she can't TELL me....
