Guest Anonymous Posted November 29, 2002 Posted November 29, 2002 About a month ago, hubby broke a glass dish on the kitchen floor. We thought it was all cleaned up but apparently wasn't as I had a piece of glass in my foot. It worked its way out about a week later. At the same time, we saw a bloody foot print on the floor. Kenzo had a small cut on his paw, right behind the large pad. The cut was a round hole about the size of the tube that holds ink in a ball point pen (the inside diameter of the plastic tube, not outside). We watched it for a day and it healed with no problems. He never favored the foot, just licked it all the time. That healed up in about 2 days. Yesterday, we noticed him licking that same foot quite a bit. Sure as crap, the hole is back. No blood on the floors but a little when he's licking. He still is not favoring it, and acts totally normal. Could this be glass? Would it take THIS long to work it's way out (a month)???? Should I take him into the vet? The wound looks clean, not infected. He acts fine other when we try to look at it. He doens't want us to touch it, of course. I feel awful that we never took him in to begin with, but like I said earlier, it healed on its own (so we thought). Any input would be appreciated! Quote
imported_Foster Posted November 29, 2002 Posted November 29, 2002 Are you sure that Kenzo just hasn't her pad area down during play? One of my dogs does this all the time even while we play outside in the grass. It heals within a couple days and she will tear it again and then it heals. She has some white pads and they seem to be more sensitive and they rip easily but her black pads will be ripped and every once in awhile. Quote
Hobbit Posted November 30, 2002 Posted November 30, 2002 Gigi can you look at his paw at all? If not, wait until he is asleep and use a magnifying glass and see if you can see a piece of glass in his paw. It may break if you try to pull it out with tweezers, then again, it may not. You could use a piece of tape and see if it would stick to the tape and be pulled out. Peroxide may boil it out, depending on how stuck it is. Quote

Both dogs hate having their paws messed wtih...I think they think they are getting their nails cut. :o He'll gently jerk it when we touch it (as always) but since there is a cut on it, he'll want to lick it immediatly. His fur covers it as well, so we have to move that back which means we have to touch his foot more. They both are SO nail cut paranoid! Anyway, he doesn't nip or anything, he is very well behaved (he's NEVER nipped at someone. The only time he growled was when someone he didn't like came into our house when his pups were still with us). He just wants to clean it if we try to look at it. The glass bowl was white. That's how I saw the piece stuck in my foot. Should be easy to spot, but restraining my buddy will be harder (on my heart! ) Thanks for the advise, Hobbit! I will try that. He's asleep right now, but he is in my spot on the couch so I know he's on alert. When I'm at the computer, he takes my spot but knows that once I'm off, he's out of there! So he's always prepared for that! Sorry for the long windedness (is that a word?) but I spent all day with 2 6 yr old girls and then this evening with both girls, a 3yr old boy, a 1 yr old boy, and a newborn girl...and their mom! 4 kids, my age mother, and can do it all. That sure makes ya think twice about jumping into motherhood! He's sure acting normal, though. Only a little extra cleaning on that paw. Quote
gooeydog Posted November 30, 2002 Posted November 30, 2002 Are you sure he doesn't have an allergy to something? Maybe grass or some sort of plant outside he's not usually in contact with? Or mold from all the leaves? I would think that if there was still glass in his foot, it would be irritated looking. The feet are easy for a dog to reach, so if they have a cut on them, they will lick a lot. Quote
Hobbit Posted November 30, 2002 Posted November 30, 2002 Dogs have amazing feet. They take so much abuse from the elements, heal relatively fast and are always ready to take the dog anywhere -- :P ! Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted December 1, 2002 Posted December 1, 2002 WEll, we got a good look at it last night. It resembles a mosquito bite...but the hole where the bite would have taken place is bigger. It's a little swollen, but again, only the size of the bite. I say this as I am feeding them both Girl Scout Cookies. Now, is that spoiled or what? How many dogs get the expensive and OH SO GOOD GS Cookies????? Anyway, it's getting better.... OK kids...one more cookies and THAT'S IT! Four is PLENTY! Quote

Kiger Posted December 2, 2002 Posted December 2, 2002 Hope his paw is better. Clicker train him so he will let you hold it. I did it with Kato and it only took two 15 minutes sessions before I could clip all his nails with him just sitting there - much easier then putting him in a head lock. I'm betting your doggies can be bribed with a piece of steak too. Oh the nails...yes...we conquered that last night. Boy, did we have some mad dogs. First they got a bath in the morning, then they got their nails trimmed at night! Not happy....Kika is better in the bath and Kenzo is better with the nails. We got our Christmas pix taken in front of the tree, so they had to look pretty for the pictures! Kenzo's paw looks the same. We got a good look at it last night, snuggling in bed. Looks like a skeeter bite with a bigger bite hole. If it's not better with in the next few days, he'll be going in to see the Dr. Quote
Hobbit Posted December 3, 2002 Posted December 3, 2002 [quote name='Mei-Mei']Hmmmm, Caramel Delights. Drool, drool....oh, sorry Hobbit! "Drool Delights"? Yummy....... where is that puking emoticon? Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted December 4, 2002 Posted December 4, 2002 Quick update, the sore has scabbed over. Must be getting better! God I worry too much. Quote
Horsefeathers! Posted December 4, 2002 Posted December 4, 2002 Nah, you don't worry too much. You are "conscientious." In best Martha Stewart voice... "That's a very good thing." Glad Kenzo seems to be finally on the mend. Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted December 4, 2002 Posted December 4, 2002 Thanks HF....just like you said about that inner voice...you MUST listen to it. Sometimes I think I listen to it too hard...and other times I wonder if I'm just making it up. Is that voice REALLY saying that, or am I just a freaking nut that should be hospitalized? Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted December 4, 2002 Posted December 4, 2002 [quote name='sashagirl']Are you really asking? Cuz I would go for the freaking nut if I were you!!! What are you saying, Sash????? You think I'm a NUT? You think I need to be strapped to a bed with tubes in me and tranquilized till I can only drool like Hobbit's aunt-in-law????? Hmmm... You just might be right there. Shhh.....don't tell anyone though.... Quote

She's nice, leave me alone! Oh, I wanna go to the carnival! I wanna get some candy! I wanna get some toys! SHUT UP YOU STUPID KID! Now be nice to her! It's a mess in here... :( Quote
wildbunch Posted December 4, 2002 Posted December 4, 2002 Hey guys, A year ago while riding my draft horse he stepped on Willow's (my mal) paw. Cracked the pad wide open, well as we all know you can't stitch a pad with very much success. I put some antibacterial lotion inside the cut and wrapped the foot up to the knee in a booty made of vet-wrap. Worked great he couldn't get anything inside the wound and couldn't play with it a whole lot. He looked like a cat the first time he started walking with the booty. But, he got used to it. It heeled quickly. I changed the bootie every day when inside so that the wound could breath. Hope this helps I always have vet-wrap around for the horses and it's very cheap. Usually $0.69 to $0.99. I highly recommend keeping some around. You can wrap almost any wound on the body with it, it sticks to itself. Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted December 4, 2002 Posted December 4, 2002 That's a great idea, but in my case, I would need the cone too cuz they would rip that stuff off. Kika found out how to get her doggy diapers off when she was in heat (before she was spayed)! :o How did you keep Willow from leaving it alone???? Quote
wildbunch Posted December 4, 2002 Posted December 4, 2002 I know this will sound really mean but you can put a little hot sauce diluted in water and put a small amount on the vet-wrap. One taste and they're done. Also the elizabethan collar can work. We started Willow inside with the booty so we could watch him. Everytime he even thought of touching it we gave a sharp NO, leave it. He is fine now lets us put anything anywhere. With the nail thing, we had the same problem with Willow for a while. Hated anyone touching his feet, wouldn't bite, but would make it impossible to hold him still. Took 3 people to hold him down. Every night during cuddle time start with the upper leg and just start massaging, eventually you'll work your way down to the paw. Start massaging gently and tell him "What a good boy/girl!" in a very soft voice. It may take a long time but the long term results are so worth it. Hope this helps. Quote
Carolk9s Posted December 4, 2002 Posted December 4, 2002 Just an addition to the vet wrap idea, great idea by the way, you must be absolutely sure there is NO infection present before wrapping it up nice and snug. Ugly situation in the brew then. Quote
