cairnmom Posted November 28, 2002 Posted November 28, 2002 After being off work since the middle of October, I start a new job on Dec 2. Frodo is use to being in his kennel from about 9am to 4pm with a 1hour break around noon. But now, he will suddenly have to be in there from 7:30-12:15 and 12:45 until 5:15. Is this going to be too long? My other option would be to kennel him in the AM and then leave him in the kitchen for the afternoon. But, then he will probably go potty in the kitchen. Will that be bad for his housetraining? My other option is puppy daycare. But, it is $16/day and I couldn't afford that every day. Maybe once a week for a break tho. Maybe on the day we have puppy class (Wednesday). Also, should I keep up this schedule on weekends? We usually just let him roam the house and bring him with us when possible when we do stuff on weekends or we kennel him if he can't come with. Any advice??? Thanks, Jessica Quote
cairnmom Posted November 28, 2002 Author Posted November 28, 2002 Also.... Frodo is in his kennel at night. That is from about 11pm until 6:30am. I am really concerned with him being in a kennel for so long. Even with a break during the day....This only gives him 1 hour in the morning and 1/2 at noon and 6 in the evening. That is about 16 hours in the kennel. Granted, he sleeps during those times but still...I just want to do the right thing. Wish I didn't have to work :) Jessica Quote
corgilady Posted November 29, 2002 Posted November 29, 2002 Having owned a cairn....that seems too much to me. Mine would have been a basket case for the 5 hours she was out in the evening. Is that how Frodo will be? Quote
imported_Foster Posted November 29, 2002 Posted November 29, 2002 Personally, I don't think that is too long. All of my dogs will spend at least that long in a kennel. If you think about it, you are actually breaking up the time spent in the kennel from 7 hours to 5 hours at a time with a half break in the middle of it. If you are going home for that half hour, you will just need to make sure to make that 30 minutes worth it. I was never big on keeping the dogs on a particular schedule on the weekends. The only thing that was similar was the fact that when I could not watch my dogs or I had to leave, they would be kenneled. Other than that, they get freedom on the weekends... Quote
cairnmom Posted November 30, 2002 Author Posted November 30, 2002 Well, he definately won't be a basketcase. He actually likes his kennel. Just sleeps and plays with his favorite chew toy (a big plush bone :) ). I am more worried about if he will eat enough and go potty in the kennel. Like, if I feed him at lunch, is he going to have to go potty at 2pm? I don't want him started on going potty in his kennel! Quote
sheesh Posted March 9, 2003 Posted March 9, 2003 I think the 1 day of doggie daycare/week is a good idea. That is what I do - the change in scenery does wonders for my girl. Can't afford to send her there daily, but she gets to be social and pack-like during that 1 fun-filled day. Quote
cairnmom Posted May 7, 2003 Author Posted May 7, 2003 Surprised to see this post up :P Frodo LOVES his kennel. He begs to go in at night. Just have to figure out where to put it in the house...right now it is in the hall off the kitchen. Guess giving him a treat everytime he went in helped. Now he is only in there at night (11-7) and if I leave during the day. I try to leave him out if I'm only gone for 15 minutes or so. But, he loves tissue. Monday he pulled about 50 sheets out of the box and shredded them ALL over the livingroom. Weee lol. Well at least HE had fun. Quote
