Guest Anonymous Posted November 28, 2002 Posted November 28, 2002 I want to know if anyone has heard of a retreiver that kills and dismembers small animals. I know that retrievers are used for hunting birds but they should only bring them back. Does anyone know how to stop a dog from killing small animals. :( Quote
bk_blue Posted November 29, 2002 Posted November 29, 2002 I can't really help you... some dogs have a great urge to destroy things they catch. However I would imagine a trained gundog would not do this, or would have this nasty habit bred out of them or corrected? :-? Getting the dog to "drop" what it is carrying on command (you could use something like "leave it" or "drop it" so as not to confuse with the command "drop") might help... ? Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted December 2, 2002 Posted December 2, 2002 The key word here would be trained... I think the retriever would see the animals as "game".. I had a Lab who would hunt out in the fields behind our house. He uncovered several nests of rabbits and proceeded to kill them.. I think this came from his love and desire to hunt. He was fulfilling what he was bred to do... How do you stop them?? You train them to hunt.. You use them to hunt... Quote
