Has anyone else heard this? Someone on another board was talking about it, and they said that have have been several instances where dogs that have been having seizures didn't have them anymore after they were switched to a heartworm preventive without ivermectin.

There are rumors about this. Some dogs are sensitive to any kind of pesticide. Our Border Collie had a seizure (12 hrs) after being given her regular dose of Interceptor (Milbemycin). She is 2 yrs old and has been on Interceptor since she was 5 months old with no side effects (until now).

Ivermectin and "ectin" based products have been known to cause seizures with fatal results in herding bred dogs (I guess I should add *alleged* as not to be sued), along with diminished fertility and severe birth defects.

I was not aware that Ivermectin had been FDA approved for anything but livestock (not dogs/cats etc...), even though it is administered to pets. This may have changed since the patent has expired, recently.

Hobbit went to parents house last weekend and my dad was showing me his dogs new heartworm pills...Well guess what they are???????????
Ivermectin!!! The vet sold them to him... Dad bought Interceptor last couple of times online because it was cheaper than at his vets office... So when he went back to get a prescription vet said wait I have these now and they only cost $18.00.... Sooooo Dad and I get in this big debate over Ivermectin and the side effects...(he is the one who raised English Setters forever!!) He said that is what was used forever before Interceptor and everything else came out...
Anyway debate ended I won...

Although I will say that in the pamplet inside it does make a reference to Collies having seizures BUT only if given LARGE doses!!!!!

Wonder if Jac would have a reaction?? Hummmm I do not think it is worth a risk!!!

Some dogs, especially Collie and Collie related breeds, have a problem with the blood/brain barrier letting ivermectin pass.
It causes seizures and much too often death.

This is a genetic flaw, autosomal recessive deletion
mutation in gene encoding for P-glycoprotein to be exact.
Don't ask - I dont' understand that either :-)

Just because your dog isn't related to Collies doesn't make ivermectin safe. The mutation can pop up in any breed, you actually don't know about your dog until you've tried ivermectin.

I never use ivermectin on any of my dogs for any reason.
Better safe than sorry.

There have been problems associated with all of the heartworm medications and those for fleas and ticks. Many people use them successfully and without incident, but there's no way to detect what dog can or could have a serious or fatal reaction to them.

Yet.
There is rumoured it will soon be possible to test for this by DNA
