Bear with me - this one is stupid. :)
Kato is the first male dog I have ever owned. After he pees he now kicks the grass with his back feet and hops around. This happened like overnight, so maybe his hormones just kicked in or something. I know a lot of male dogs do this, but my question is why? What is the purpose of this strange little ritual?

Both of mine do this...male and female! But then again, my female will lift her leg to pee when we go on walks! :o

LOL! Kika is my Miss Priss as well...she's a PRINCESS in her eyes (ex show dog...you know, the Miss America thing). BUT she is Miss Alpha as well. Maybe that's why she pee's that way?????? I don't know but she'll only do it when we go for a walk and she's marking at homes where there are other dogs!

It's a riot to see, isn't it!!!!

Oh funny! I can just see the Hand on the Head thing! LOL!!!!

Talking about our princesses, have you ever painted her nails? I want to paint Kikas, I'm sure she'd love it, but I'm afraid of A) she'll lick the nails before they dry B) she pulls her paws away when you mess with them because of the dredded nail trimming....

Candy will pee then scuff up the ground to distribute her scent more. It's a riot when Candy and my sisters Chi mix are in the same area, Krissy also does the ground scuff thing. So Krissy pees, scuffs the ground, walks away. Candy will go to the same spot, pee, scuff the ground, walk away. Jesse comes along, hikes his leg and pees over both scents, he must be saying these are my females! Its so funny to watch. When Candy scuffs the ground, I swear all 4 feet are in motion.

Newfiemom, maybe your right about the alpha thing, my Border Collie mix Penny is older than our Bullmastiff Charlie, but younger than our Westie mix Patch....she tends to lift her leg at times and also tries to push her way in front of the others when she is called, i do try to make sure that she knows that Patch comes before her, him being the oldest especially at feed times and walks, she ignores me though and barges straight past so then she is sent outside to wait her turn.
I have noticed with Charlie, he is the only dog who doesn't kick the grass when in the garden or out in the field!

Tarty. That's funny!

Mine don't circle but I've seen some who do. Kenzo always goes in the same area....behind the skate board ramp. Kika goes anywhere in the second half of the yard. Mainly in the MIDDLE!

Newfiemom..do your dogs have to turn round in circles to find somewhere suitable to poop?

Storm does the foot kicking thing ..personally I think it is a little tarty...like leaving a card in the phone box

No real progression on the lifting the leg thing with Blade(I am still watching and waiting)...and does anyone know how long it takes large breeds (un-neutered as yet ) to lift legs?

LOL K. How old is Blade ?

Penny turns round in a circle about 6 times before she poops!
It is annoying if your waiting to go to bed

:) I THOUGHT GLADIS WAS THE ONLY ONE SHE LIFTS HER LEG SINCE SHE WAS 5 OR 6 MONTHS OLD. SOMETIMES AND KICKS THE GRASS, I THOUGHT SHE WAS JUST COPYING PADDY WHEN THEY ARE WALKED TOGETHER IT IS FUNNY TO SEE POPPY DOES NOT DO IT SHE IS THE ELDEST. :) :)

Charlie didn't start lifting his till he was 10 or 11 months old....i thought he was half female lol.
It is due to the balance/structure.
Not to worry Elric will eventually get there :D

Candy turns tight circles before pooping, I keep waiting for her to tip over. Shes practically spinning. In the yard, Jesse will trot in huge circles, first one side of the yard, then the other to find the perfect spot. Brittany just walks along getting loose looking in the hips til she finds a good spot.

Kato is making a doggie minefield in front of where I park my truck. I don't think he wants me to leave. :)
I need to pick it up, but it's so much easier to wait until it starts freezing at night - poopsicles. :o

The only time we have flushed it is when we had accidents in the house....

When I flushed it the toilet got stopped up...

My Toby does the dig-the-grass thing after he does ANYTHING. Now he has taught it to the other 2 guys, and they are having a contest to see WHO CAN FLING THE MOST MUD/GRASS/MULCH after they go. It is so embarrassing. One night at petsmart a lady said, ohhhhhhhh, THERE'S the dog that was outside throwing all the mulch! Then she turned to her "audience" and said, he was flinging it all up into the air!

hey, you all are making me feel better. i've been highly entertained by dresden's pooping habits but was actually wondering if she was a freak or if other people's dogs did the same thing but i was not about to put up a post about it.........she won't poop till she finds the right spot and she spins in circles so fast right before she goes i always wonder why she doesn't fall over. she also does the dirt flinging thing, usually when we're on our way back in and i'm standing behind her...

BK used to just cock his leg and be done with it, when Rinny came along he began copying his methodology and now pees and scratches the grass or dirt all over the place, at the park it is very embarrassing as he enthusiastically digs up half the lawn and one day he will tear a hamstring doing it. :D He shuffles along as he poos too! He can't poo in one spot, he has to move while doing it so there is always a little trail of poo about 1ft long. I do poo patrol weekly (when it's dried out), I pick it up using 2 empty dog food cans, put the poo in a plastic bag and put it in the bin. BK also pees where he wants when he wants, too bad if there is another dog in the way... Rinny used to get peed on all the time if we were out walking!! BK also peed on this little white Bichon Frise at obedience last week, he found something he wanted to pee on in the grass and he did, the poor Bichon was in the way and had a yellow patch on his face which his owner washed off quicksmart (she thought it was quite funny)

What a knobhead I am. I thought most dogs did the circle 'round and scratch and kick thing. Even my 3 females. All of them do the scratch and kick thing from time to time, but my female Lhasa Apso, Misdemeanor, ALWAYS does it. She's in full coat, so I often think it's a game to see how much dirt and crud she can fling onto her back :x . She also does the leg lifty thing to pee.

Since we're sharing weird poop habits, anyone else have a dog who will back up a tree to take a dumpsky? My Schnauzer, Simon, backs up the tree. Lemme give you a visual. Front feet on the ground, back feet as high on the tree as he can get them and turds rolling down his belly until they roll off his chest. Weirdo. :-?

Who said dogs weren't individuals? I think we humans are in a rut when it comes to expressing ourselves . My three all have different ways TO GO! Ben has to find some thick grass or low shrub to back right into for his poop and as we have drought conditions at the moment it can take a while. Sam does the scratchy thing and it doesn't matter where I stand when he is on lead, he will aim the shower of dirt at me, not sure if he's trying to tell me something? Pebbles does a very ladylike scratch, slow motion, first one leg.....then.....the other leg.....then......again....and...
again. Great when you are in a hurry, there's no moving on till she has finished.

BK once a week?? :o
I have to do "Poo Patrol" twice a day :o

LOL, I thought BK pooed a LOT but nothing compared to a Saint. :D
We have a biggish yard as well, so more places for him to poo...
