[quote name='Hobbit']You KNEW my demented mind would think this --- what part (of the body) would the trunk of the elephant be? :o

Oh Hobbit, what are we gonna do with you?

Nothin', I hope. I like you just the way you are!

My paper is loaded with tons of "designer" dogs but not as many on Saturdays as Sundays. Here are todays:

Cock-a-poo puppy. Black Female, toy size. $235

Chow/black lab pups. $50

Norweighian elkhound-Shephard cross. Very fluffy, very adorable. $100-185

Poodle mix pups, tiny. $325 (hello, what are they mixed with? of course they're tiny now....they're puppies

Shih-tzu&Yorkie mix. What a nice looking friendly pet! Soft hair, non-shedding. $400

Then there are the two puppy mills (I swear) that are in the paper EVERY week. One has Lhasa, shih-tzu, maltese, bichon frise and "teddy bear" puppies. The other has bichons, cairns (NOT where I got mine), Jack Russels, Min Pins, Westies and Maltese.

Then at the bottom is the Humane Society ad with the dogs of the week....a chow, st bernard and english shepherd/BC mix (given up because of "high energy" at 10 weeks old). I have seen these dogs and they are so sweet. The St Bernard is just a big baby girl.

So people are paying 100s for mixes when they can get a beautiful dog at the human society for $65 plus 1/2 off neutering. I can't wait to start volunteering there.

QUESTION?????
What are the Kennel Control Associations in Australia (in particular), USA and UK doing to protect the businesses of the registered breeders against this exploitation. We pay fees to these people to run our business, what are they doing for us?

That's apart from helping to wipe out these puppy farms etc. Breeders have to agree to following a code of ethics to protect the wellbeing of their dogs which is supposed to be the aim of these associations. How can they distance themselves from the suffering of a lot of those farm puppies and still say they have the wellfare of dogs at heart?

I am not a breeder but I believe the Kennel Control Councils are doing absolutely nothing to stamp out puppy mills. There is a politician in Australia who has a puppy farm. There was a great fuss about this a couple of years ago but he's still in operation!!!!!!
Evidently these Canine control people do nothing except collect the registrations fees of responsible breeders. Useless lot.

BLUE HEELER mix puppies, 8wks old, tails docked, $25ea.

This makes me especiallly mad.
Any fool knows that the heeler needs its tail while working to act as a rudder, why do some people insist on docking it????

There is a completely different breed of dog- the Stumpy-Tailed Cattle Dog- which has no tail by nature.

Which politician was that? Doesn't surprise me though, in a country where the PM can get re-elected on a blatantly racist platform that another example of how NOT to behave towards animals is still in power :x

OK, I'll shut up now

I remember that, it was on the news, a obvious puppy farm, it was near Ballarat, cant remember the guys name either but it was brought up in Parliament after complaints of the conditions were received. Have a vague recollection that the guy was a Doctor, human or Vet. I'm not sure. Hang on, I don't mean he was human!

Yeah Bensam that's the one. He's a doctor of something but not vet or medical doctor. A dead set puppy mill is what he runs. What a disgrace. Of course the RSPCA did nothing I suppose because the Wirthless head of the organisation has political aspirations.

Very good point, Bensam.... I don't know that the AKC(american) does anything at all about them.

I don't know that the kennel club here has ever tried to enforce that code of ethics?????? has anyone else here heard of such a thing?

Girls (bk and Jacsmom) : That is such a soap box for me. I have preached upon deaf ears FOR YEARS and absolutely will never, ever dock my Heeler pups tails. I don't care if the Pope himself asked me to do it. People who dock tails are ignorant of the breed and just absolutely twist me to no end. I think I'm venting ... ALOT today.....

Jacsmom, It's more than just a look thing. Heelers need their tails for work. The stumpy tail cattle dog is born without a tail as the breed description depicts. They look a like heelers, I wonder if that is the breed they have on the farms over there.

Just a question - and before I get beheaded, no I don't think ACD'S or Kelpies should have their tails docked, but how do the naturally bob tailed working dogs compensate for having no tails? We have here in Aussie a number of racing greyhounds which for various reasons have tails which are not the full length and it doesn't seem to affect them when racing. Any theories on this. Tail docking is becoming an issue here and apart from the mutilation angle is there any evidence that shows the tail is necessary for balance etc.? I have read that some breeds were originally docked as they suffered injury to a long tail when doing working.

Every Heeler around here have their tails docked. I have only seen one in this town with a tail. When they have ads in the paper for Heelers (and some Heeler mixes) their tails are docked.

:o Late-I know....buuuuuuuuuuuuuut I am soooooooo mad! I just hafto post this!

Golden Retrievers

Gentle and intelligent Golden Retrievers are ideal family pets.
Willing to please, they are a joy to train.
To reduce size we also cross these beautiful dogs with cocker spaniels resulting in a pet which looks like a smaller Golden Retriever with longer ears.
Cost is approximately $550 for Golden retrievers.

TO REDUCE SIZE????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHY WOULD THEY WANT TO REDUCE THE SIZE? ANYWAY THAT WOULD MAKE IT A MIX! NOT A PUREBRED! SOME PEOPLE MAKE ME SICK!

Why my sweet lovable Goldens? Why? Sadly, they have become subject of puppy milling due to thier popularty...... I'm soooooo glad MY golden is safe and sound at home with me! AND isn't a cocker mix!

Oh,Oh, LAST one pleeeaaaseee!

This dog is the Goodle right? I'm thinki'n a mix with a Golden cuz look at the tail, it resembles that of a Golden, also the head structure and the legs, and the ears.....

Not sure. Picture isn't that clear!

[b]Staffordshire Bull Terriers, and crosses of most of these breeds.

Their are some people in this town that have about 40-50 dogs. Most are purebred but they do not sell purebred puppies. They mix them and sell them $70+. They are almost as bad as a puppy mill. They keep them in their house in cages but they do feed, water them, and make sure they are ok. They lived in my moms boyfriends trailer park and when they moved out you couldn't hardly walk in the house because of the smell. They never let their dogs outside.

Rowie, that link takes you to the 'breeders kennels' which is the one our marvellous 'Burke's Backyard' is promoting. We suspect he has an interest and are trying to track down the owners, directors, etc. Will let the forum know what we find. Disgusting, isn't it?

No Anne, the idiots are docking the Heeler tails, they aren't Stumpy-tails. Back yard breeders *think* that Heelers MUST have their tails docked, these are also the same people that advertise, think and say that they have blue and red Heeler cross puppies. NO SUCH thing. They are ALL ACD's, they just happen to be red or blue. You can't cross them, because they are the SAME breed. It's like a large pet peeve for me since we have ACD's and have had them for many, many years. People who dock do not know anything about the breed, they can't tell you where they originated from or that the tail is part of their characteristic. AND...another pet peeve, they always say, "Yeah, they look good riding around in the back of my pick-up truck". Oh, that really just makes me want to strangle them. And trust me.....that's ALL the dog knows how to do is to jump in the back of the truck. These people don't spend ANY time with the dog at all. They don't care, as long as the dog rides in the back!........okay, I'll stop with the ranting and raving....

Don't stop ranting and raving Hobbit, the more we publicise this awful practise the more people get to know about it. I can't see for the life of me why anyone would want to dock the tail of a Heeler. Mind you I should clarify I have a Rottweiler who has a docked tail. It was done when I got her from the breeder. The Rottweiler club in Australia insists that all the titled dogs have docked tails. Hopefully this barbarian custom will die out as it is doing in Europe.
Rowie, the people advertising these cross breeds are in Melbourne Australia. They are the ones we are complaining hotly about. I can't for the life of me fathom out why people do not research the breed they want so at least they know something about it instead of buying these cross breeds. I would guess a large number of these dogs end up in shelters because they are bought by ignorant people who think they are buying 'designer dogs' as promoted by the gardener we all detest.

Posted

Thanks Anne.

These people are "buying" non-realistic characteristics of a dog that is being reported as *perfect* by a bunch of fraudulent liars (for any other better word). These designer dogs are not perfect, they don't have the best of both worlds, they are not disease free, they are not of perfect temperment.....etc... and these buyers are falling for the sellers sales pitch. Some people are just not going to listen --- case in point "Jeff" with the so called *attack* puppy. He has his mind made up, but no one can say you guys didn't try.

Still ranting....... :evilbat: :evilbat:
