Guest Anonymous Posted November 1, 2002 Posted November 1, 2002 The more I see the black and tan, the more I like them as well (but my babies are both red so I HAVE to be a fan of red no matter WHAT). The sesame are too "wild" looking for my tastes. Did you find any of my information helpful or did you already know that stuff? My girl's breeder says I'm a great ambassador for the breed!!! Quote
science_doc Posted November 1, 2002 Author Posted November 1, 2002 Gigi, Your information was EXTREMELY helpful. I am going over everything with my partner tonight so we can be sure this is what we REALLY want. We both love huskies and adopted our last dog with that breed in mind. Shibas seem pretty similar, at least in attitude. The only thing we are worried about now is that we wanted to wait to get the dog until we had a house with a fenced yard, but we are finding that hard to do. Can a Shiba be crated during the day? We will committ as much time to exercise as necessary, but the crate is going to be necessary unless we MUST wait till I get a house. Then it's going to be a wait of 1 year or more, KILLER. Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted November 1, 2002 Posted November 1, 2002 Oh yeah, they can be crated. Kenzo WAS crate trained when we got him....note I say WAS....we didn't follow through with it though. The first night, we put his crate in our room (age 16 weeks) and put him in it. He was wonderful. 1/2 through the night I got up to take him out to go potty. Put him back in and SCREAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He was NOT happy. So, I got up at 4 am with him for the day! He just wanted to get up to play and I wanted him to go back to bed...but he wasn't gonna! That's the last time he's been in a crate. One of our pups is VERY crate trained. I guess she goes into her crate when ever their kids are buggin' her. She used to go in at night but now she sleeps between her guardian's legs (Spoiled). Have you ever heard a shiba???? I'll find you the website that has their scream...... Oh, and yes, I think the black and tans resemble a husky BIG TIME! Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted November 1, 2002 Posted November 1, 2002 OK. This is what I heard everymorning once the pups first saw me (when we had the litter)... http://www.shibaweb.com/looking.htm Go to "Want to hear some Shiba Sounds, go here" on that sight! And this is the shiba scream that Kenzo let out after I tried to crate him the second time that first night we had him.... LOL...the memories.... Quote

A shiba is very happy inside (and out) and would be fine inside with you all the time if you did give the proper exercise! Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted November 1, 2002 Posted November 1, 2002 One more tip....not only will they run if they can (no fenced in yard) they are escape artists. Many times we have "lost" our dogs in the neighborhood due to an insuffient fence. We have also had them bolt out when the front door is open (front yard is not fenced)! Quote
science_doc Posted November 1, 2002 Author Posted November 1, 2002 Oaky one more question, how do Shibas do with heat? I'm not sure how big of a deal this will be since the dog willl be inside an air conditioned apartment when it's alone, but we thought we should ask. Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted November 1, 2002 Posted November 1, 2002 BRING 'EM ON! I love questions... Heat. I'm in Iowa and we have some hot, humid days (90-105) and they have free access to the house/yard via doggy door. They love to stay outside! Same with the winter...they love to lay on the snow. Now, when they come inside and are all hot from running around, they just plop down on our hardwood floors for a cool down. We've never had a heat problem with them but I'm sure you have to take the same precautions as you do with any double coated dog. OH! They aren't fond of water. We have a baby pool outside for my stepdaughter that is always filled with water. Other than using it for a drink, the have NO want of getting IN the water! :o Quote
science_doc Posted November 1, 2002 Author Posted November 1, 2002 I had to go to another computer to hear the sounds of the Shiba, but there not as bad as what I was imagining :P Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted November 2, 2002 Posted November 2, 2002 LOL! They sure have a scream, don't they? They are quite unique dogs, but then again ALL dogs are unique and beautiful in my eyes! Quote
bk_blue Posted November 2, 2002 Posted November 2, 2002 They are very cute :D Unfortunately I can't get the sounds to work, never mind I can imagine them  Quote
science_doc Posted November 3, 2002 Author Posted November 3, 2002 Oh Gigi, I spent the weekend looking at web pages about the Shiba breed on the web and well, I'm feeling a bit discouraged. Our cats are BIG 13 and 15 #'s and the female well she is a bit of a BITCH(excuse me please, but that's the best way to describe her attitude). I'm really scared that even if we really work at finding a docile Shiba, we could end up with aggression problems later in life. Mina (the BIG female) would waltz up to our husky mix and pop her in the face (no claws, but still an agressive move) so fast that I could never back the dog up fast enough (I ALWAYS kept the dog leashed for the kitties sake). Anyway we are in love with the look and description of the Shiba, but feeling a bit afraid.......the dog can almost always be trained to ignor the cats, but a cat looking for trouble will sure get trouble, know what I mean? Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted November 3, 2002 Posted November 3, 2002 A cat wtih attitude, imagine that! Hmmm. I really haven't had much experience with our dogs and cats. There was one in the back yard recently. It was batting at Kenzo and Kenz was really pretty tame about it. He just sat down and looked at it like HUH? Kika came outside, spotted it and went RIGHT for it. Once Kika went for it, Kenzo did. Since you are looking at getting a rescue, I would try to find one that is fostered with cats and find out the attitude of the cats, and the shiba with the cat. I had a cat before I found out I was allergic to them. He did not have the typical cat attitude, but most cats I've met HAVE that Cats Rule, Dogs Drool attitude. If you are "trying" to wait for a year to get the shiba, or any dog, then I would just keep your eyes open for one being fostered with a cat. It could make all the difference in the world! Quote

I got the website from a post that Shannon_C had put up. Some more shiba stuff for you! Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted November 4, 2002 Posted November 4, 2002 Thanks for the reassurance, I find myself getting all worried, maybe for no reason  Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted November 4, 2002 Posted November 4, 2002 Is that you Science_doc? as guest? If so, I'm sure any foster home will help you find a cat friendly shiba. I would start looking as soon as you are willing to take one on. It might take a long time, or there might already be one waiting for you! OH! Here's a bit of info... I've been told (by one of my breeders) that MALE shibas are better pets than females are. Most people think female are always better but for this breed, I was told males are..... Kenzo does listen better than Kika, but then again, they had totally different upbringings. Quote
science_doc Posted November 4, 2002 Author Posted November 4, 2002 Gigi, that was me  guess the computer had logged me out, thought I checked that :o I'm going to try and contact a rescue and see what they say about helping me find the perfect Shiba. I'm surprised by the idea that males would make a better pet, I have to admit I'm one of those people who assumes that females tend to be more easy going  I wonder if having a male dog will help the female cat be less aggressive (BTW both the cats are altered and have been since as soon as they were ready for surgery). Thanks again for all your help, I'll keep you updated on our progress. Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted November 4, 2002 Posted November 4, 2002 Kenzo is a lot mellower (is that a word?) than Kika....a LOT. Now, I would ask the rescue organizations as well about the male/female thing. See if others feel that way as well. And PLEASE keep me update. I really wanna know your experience with this and if you get a shiba! Or even if you DON'T get a shiba! Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted November 4, 2002 Posted November 4, 2002 Really K? I had never heard of that before we got Kenzo. But then again, I've never had much experience with dogs until 2 yrs ago! I will say, Kika is much stronger (not physically) of a dog than Kenzo. She's the boss even though Kenzo's jaw is almost twice her size! Just check out this pix... Anyone know of other breeds that are the same way??? Women rule in my house... Thanks for sharing that K! Quote
