Poodle puppies coat.

Hi everyone. My question is...at what age will a poodle puppy's coat start to look kinky, curly? I visited a litter of 2 day old poodle puppies and noted they were completely slick coated-not even a wave. I would like to consider buying the runt of the litter but have some reservations even after seeing the mother. Please advise.

If you're already having reservations about the mother, that's already a bad sign. Poodle coats are indeed hereditary. If you are looking for a Poodle with a proper coat, I'd suggest contacting a breed club for referrals to a reputable breeder. That's your best bet if you are really concerned about a proper Poodle coat. It's not just supposed to be curly. It should also be harsh, not soft and cottony. Unless you plan to keep your Poodle shaved down, or brushed out thoroughly several times a week (if you intend to keep a longish clip), you do NOT want a cottony coat!

Some of the breed clubs can put you in touch with the breed specific rescues. I recently adopted a Standard Poodle from a rescue that got him from a show kennel (breeder became gravely ill and assessed the dogs... the ones that qualify will be shown; the rest were adopted as pets). Gorgeous dog with (yay) proper coat.

All Poodle puppies will typically have that soft, cottony fluff until their adult coats come in. Looking at the parents will give you some idea of what those adult coats will be like. If the parents are cottony coated, it's likely the offspring will be. At best, it's a coin toss.

Good luck from another Poodle fan. I have a Toy and a Standard.
