Need Puppy help for Chinese Crested Powder Puff

I have the most adorable, sweet, lovable 11 week old Chinese Crested Powder Puff who I brought home yesterday. This pup is getting over a bout of kennel cough and has been on meds for 6 days and has shown excellent result. His name is Gizmo! He has been home for 24 hours and I am nervous about making sure he has enough food and water. He only eats a little bit at a time and needs coaxing to drink water out of the bowl. He used to drink his water out of a bottle afixed to his crate. His teeth are very little and he has been raised on Eukanuba small breed puppy food. So far today, he has had about 1/4 cup. He has urinated at least 9-10 times since we brought him home (almost always outside, he whines when he has to go, doesn't want to soil his room!/crate!) and he has pooped at least 6 times. That leads me to believe he is getting enough but how much does this little fella need? How can I get him to not be afraid of water in the bowl and should it be accessible all the time? Food too? Should I moisten the food? Is it too hard for his teeth? He is absolutely awesome and I want to be sure I am meeting his needs.

Also, is the linolieum floor too slippery for him. I plan to leave him enclosed by a gate in the kitchen when I have to leave. What should I do about the floor, anything?

Firstly congratulations on your new baby
Secondly welcome to dogomania  .
I should not worry too much about the lino floor, he will get used to it.
Did the breeder that you got gizmo from not give you a diet sheet?
How often are you feeding him, or are you leaving the food out all the time?
With the water :o was it a sort of rabbit drinking bottle?

Puppy teeth are always tiny and extremely sharp :x

Water should be available all the time,
Is he really scared of the water bowl?

Awaiting your reply

Congrats on your new pup! I also suggest you contact his breeder to check on his puppy feeding requirements. I bet he is tiny right now!
As far as the water bowl, are you currently using a stainless steel bowl or a plastic bowl? Stainless is better in that in can be thoroughly washed/sterilized but some dogs are afraid of their teeth touching the steel or the shimmer of the water in a shiny steel bowl. When Jesse BSD was younger, he had crooked teeth in the very front that would 'ping' on a metal bowl and he freaked out each time. I had to use a heavy plastic bowl for him. The girls are ok with metal bowls.
Also, you've only had your pup 1 day? He might just need a little more time to settle in and relax, probably will be better about eating and drinking after a while.
Best of luck to you and I'd love to see a photo of Gizmo!

Thank you both for your replies. Unfortunately, I worked very late last night and didn't log on. Gizmo is doing okay. My husband took him to the vet for me today and he does indeed have kennel cough. His lungs are clear and he is not dehydrated (that was my BIG worry). He is getting more used to the floor but that water bowl is something. He weighs 4.3 lbs and is not malnourished according to the vet. I didn't think so but I can't believe he only eats 1/8-1/6 of a cup of food at a time. Maybe when he is feeling a little better! HE IS ABSOLUTELY ADORABLE and such a good pup! I am a big worrywart I guess, but I want him to be healthy, safe and happy.

I have to be honest, we didn't get him directly from a breeder. I do know who the breeder is and can/will contact her. In the past, all my pets came from friends or the dog pound. I found out that my puppy can never sire any others because of a mild luxating patellas (Grade I - mild, at risk for arthritis) (as aposed to IV - severe requiring surgery). We never intended to anyway but I never knew of or heard of this before. I might have if I dealt with a breeder directly but I will not ever regret this beautiful puppy coming into my life.

He is very lovable and wants to snuggle all the time. He is training very well and I can hardly believe my luck! I'll keep you posted and really do appreciate the helpful hints. His reluctance to the water bowl may be because he is still learning how to drink from one as opposed to drinking from a bottle suspended from the cage. He does sometimes cough which must irritate his throat but the vet suggested this will pass. thanks again!

Congrats on the new puppy!
I know Frodo pee'd a lot the first day or so when I got him. I think he needs to settle in is all. He also got use to the hardwood floors and tile in the kitchen. He would skid around a lot at first but does fine now.

I use a stainless steel water dish and Frodo likes it. But, he wouldn't drink out of it the first day. He only drank the water I put in with this food. If he was bottle fed, he might not get that there is water in the dish. I know when I switched my birds from dishes to bottles, it took a long time. I just kept both near each other and eventually they got it.

Good luck!
