Guest Anonymous Posted October 19, 2002 Posted October 19, 2002 This is not about my dogs, but a friends dog who is terribly sick and no one seems to know what is wrong with him. He is a 5 month old boxer (Axel) and he has the following symptoms. He suddenly could not use his back legs and was dragging them. then the following day he couldn't stand at all, the day after that he could not lift his head either. He is eating somewhat and drinking regularly...he cries when touched, but his stool is normal. All veterinarian blood work has come back normal as has his x-rays. No one knows what is wrong with him and he is currently staying at the clinic for observation. if anyone knows any reason why this should be, please let us know. Additonal information isthat he started getting sick on mondayand on Friday he had his vaccine for Kennel Cough (in case that has anything to do with it) Although the vet says it doesnt..... Quote
mcobbin Posted November 14, 2002 Posted November 14, 2002 has this dog been exposed to any of the flea drops that you put on the shoulders? We had a beautiful, strong, healthy male hound dog, who had never had an illness in his life. two days after applying these drops to his shoulders, his back legs failed and within the week he could not stand. it came to the point that we had to hold him up, and hold his leg up for him so that he could urinate. after finding out from friends that they had similar results from using the drops, we bathed the dog furiously and gave him antibiotics and dextrose. it took a while, but he eventually recovered. it took a while for the weight to come back, but he's fine today. i'm hoping that this helps you. i'm very sorry to hear about your friends puppy  --robin Quote
mcobbin Posted November 14, 2002 Posted November 14, 2002 since you're interested, i thought i would tell you a bit more about this. The flea drops that caused this in our dog were manufactured by the Hartz company. After going through this ordeal, we discovered that this has been an on-going issue with Hartz. i've not heard of any problems with the flea drops from other companies, but i've tended to stay safer than sorry from now on, and don't use the drops from ANY company. instead i refer any flea problems directly to my vet!! You can find out more information on the health problems and litigation associated with Hartz flea drops at the following websites: http://www.elversonpuzzle.com/biospot.html http://www.pandecats.com/x/hartz_warning_update.htm http://www.kmov.com/localnews/kmov_localnews_020506_fleaproducts.5fd5b167.html http://www.wjhl.com/news/localnews/MGBO0TVZS3D.html http://www.khou.com/news/local/KHOU020520_jw_hartzfolo.4503dda.html http://www.wildlifeprotection.net/everything/eduFleas.html Quote

Daisysmom Posted January 8, 2003 Posted January 8, 2003 You know, our new little girl was acting very sluggish and strange after I had put a new (1st time ever) flea collar on her. After reading this, I wonder if it was effecting her too....... hmmm.... I took it off of her yesterday, and she seems much more lively. Sometimes I wish I had left it on :o Quote
