I wanted to find out the definations of PUPPY MILLS and came across this comment which has left me stunned and saddened! :shocked!: :(

"After World War II, when farmers were desperately seeking alternative methods of making money when traditional crops failed, the US Department of Agriculture encouraged the raising of puppies as a crop. Retail pet outlets grew in numbers as the supply of puppies increased, and puppy production was on its way."

I am so glad that this is not todays way of thinking!

Well, a puppy mill is a place where dogs are bred only for money, without thought for the dogs healthand wellbeing. They are mostly produced in big amounts and have many litters a year, unlike reputable breeders, who only have 1 or 2 litters a year. Most puppies in pet shops are from puppy mills.Puppies from mills are mostly not very healthy, have many behavioral problems, and are bad reprasentatives for the breeds. Some sell at higher prices than breeders, which is a whole big ripoff. The main bad thing is the number of unhealthy puppies they produce to add to the population of dogs without homes.

eggrolyn1223,

Your difinition is the same as mine, but I was made aware that the term PUPPY MILL meant different things to different people and I wanted to know a little more on that and was shocked at the above comment that I had come across. Sometimes I wish I didn't go searching around, I only get disappointed with our history.

It's pretty bad isn't it! Now that I know the govt introduced puppy mills, and they have metamorphosed into the hellholes they are today, what are they going to do about it???? Governments are the same the world over though, even the "good" ones have their skeletons... It's not so much admitting a mistake, it's that a lot of them deny it or justify it without actually apologising and trying to fix the problem they created in the first place.

Puppy Mills are still regulated & Licensed by the USDA/APHIS. The regulations are posted on their website.

It would be interesting to find out if, after WWII, the Puppy "Farmers" were subsidized by the USDA for raising puppies.

Someone I know bought a puppy from a centre which had many breeds for sale I said it sounds like a puppy farm but I was told "oh no we got all the right papers with her" she has got to be genuine

Mouse...did you slap their forehead and say "Heeello!" PUPPY MILL. Just because they got papers doesn't mean a thing.

Yeah, it's so frustrating .... but I did get to do the "I told you so" a couple of days ago. A lady I know was looking for a puppy, so I told her I'd help her. She said she was looking at some at a FLEA MARKET. I went thru the whole long rant about puppy mills, health problems and their treatment. She said, oh this guy's good, because he has been selling dogs there for 10 years and he has 15 different breeds. I almost feel down on the ground! JUST BECAUSE HE'S BEEN BREEDING AND SELLING DOGS FOR 10 YEARS DO NOT MEAN THE KNOWS ANYTHING!!! Well, she just couldn't wait and ended up buying one from him. Guess what? The little female has kennel cough and is partially blind! .......damn, told you so!
