Guest Anonymous Posted October 4, 2002 Posted October 4, 2002 It makes me so mad, why do people get a puppy - let their kids maul and pull it about then get rid of it a month later when it bites the brats? Then to top it all they go and get another one a few weeks later and so it starts again - this time though as the poor thing goes through it they've already got their eye on another puppy they want!!!! SOME HUMANS MAKE ME WANNA  HOBO Quote
mouseatthebusstop Posted October 4, 2002 Posted October 4, 2002  I agree. the puppy is handed to rescue centre or worse straight to the vet. I feel they should get a 12 month ban from keeping another dog. Maybe have to go on a course about responsible ownership  Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted October 4, 2002 Posted October 4, 2002 Shelters should do home visits and should try to match the dog with the people.. Yes their should be some type of time restriction on the number of dogs unless you can prove that they are being taken excellent care of!! Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted October 4, 2002 Posted October 4, 2002 I'm right there with ya! It's crazy. Mine are here until they cross the bridge.... My friend got a pup last night and she wouldn't let her kids get all that close to him yet...he's so scared being away from home and she doesn't want him to be scared of them, and she doesn't want the kids scared of HIM either (although her 3yr old still is).... At least I know he's in good hands and the kids will not be allowed to torment the poor thing. Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted October 4, 2002 Posted October 4, 2002 Kids and dogs can be great together, as long as both canine and child are taught to respect each other ( with more emphasis on the child!). I have a mixed family, kids and dogs never had a problem - even taking in rescued dogs off the street without knowing their history hasn't been any trouble. But for some people a pet such as a puppy or kitten is bought to keep the children amused - an alternative to watching the telly I suppose. I've heard on the grape vine that this certain family are getting a Giant Breed puppy soon! With any luck the breeder will fully check their suitability and hopefully see through their perfect knowledgable family routine! Quote
Guest roo Posted October 4, 2002 Posted October 4, 2002 Well, my son was reared  with dogs, he as born14 days after my first litter, he learnt to respect animals, was always watched with them, when he was in his high chair, he learnt yuk food chuck  he used to sit in the room with four adult great danes strategically placed around him, none of them ever tried to steal from the high chair, they all waited patiently for the flying yuk to eat :P :P :P And yet always wonderful the danes were with him, one of my frenchies hates him, likes him sometimes, hates him the rest. He is 12 now and has learnt to ignore the mother when she is in a mood. Sometimes in the past when he has had friends around and i see how these kids behave towards animals i have wished to cage the child :o When kids come round almost always i get the dogs put away, for for their safe keeping than anything else. Some parents are amazing, their kids only learn form them. It seems to me that kids who are not raised to have respect and love animals, pass it on. What an odd world we live in ehhhh Roo Quote
deepseasnake Posted October 4, 2002 Posted October 4, 2002 I believe its there, but I have never seen a kid act negativly around a dog, all the people I know own dogs and everone I have ever seen respects them completely! Maybe I should starting hangin out with some toddlers and then I can be mad at 'em too  Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted October 4, 2002 Posted October 4, 2002 Like yours Roo, my kids soon cottoned on to how useful the dogs could be when it came to yuk :D Come to think of it they still try to get away with it now  I always get to hear these sad tales because people think I can wade into someones house and stop it happening - trouble is I carn't; I can only offer to take the pet if they no longer want it! The latest on the pup I'm refering to is it now has an injured hind quaters :x Quote
eggrolyn1223 Posted October 5, 2002 Posted October 5, 2002 Oh I HAVE to tell you guys this......this was a long time ago...well, maybe not THAt long..anyways....ithis happened was when I had my Akita, Mocha. She was six months and I was taking her on her daily walk around the neighborhood, and right when we were passing the community swimming pool, 3 or 4 kids were playing on the lawn in front of this house....and then...the smallest girl was like..."Hey, look, there's a doggy over there, let's go "play" with it!!"...well, I though she meant coming and petting Mocha, and they ran near us( I stayed where I was cuz I thought they were NICE LITTLE KIDS....and they come and pick up rocks from the ground and, before I can stop them, start THROWING ROCKS AT MOCHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Good thing we were still some distance away from them, or we would have been hit!!!!I mean, don't they have ANY respect for a dog to know that they shouldn't hit Mocha?I had to call Mocha and start running away really fast...and the monster kids were actually LUAGHING!!!!!They were laughing cuz they thought hitting a dog was FUNNY!!!!UGHHH!!!!After that, I never let her go near kids unless I knew them, and I always took Mocha the longer way around the neighborhood, instead of passing the monster den..UGHH.. Guest Anonymous Posted October 6, 2002 Posted October 6, 2002 DON'T REMIND ME OF THE SPROUT EXPERIENCE :o I tell you what eggrolyn you arn't the only one to have met kids like that, I have stumbled across little gangs of monsters too  Mind you it's not just kids, I've also had bad times with the dogs when we've bumped into blokes who've been doing too much :drinking: Quote
bk_blue Posted October 6, 2002 Posted October 6, 2002 I reckon one of the best things to do if you become a parent (to a human, not a canine!) is to get a dog. (that is, if you are a dog lover and can take care of it properly.) I think having the dogs around as I grew up taught me a lot about caring for dogs, respecting their space, trying to decode their feelings and taking care of something that was living and breathing and dependent on you- it instills a feeling of responsibility. I've seen kids tease dogs by pulling ears and all that sort of stuff, but never any rock throwing or anything like that (thank god). Is it just this new computer or do we have new emoticons?? 0X (that's an alien BTW on my screen) Quote
corgilady Posted October 7, 2002 Posted October 7, 2002 Yes BK the new emoticons are sooooo cool!!!!! :fadein: I was walking near my house with my dogs one day and a gang of boys on bikes approached from the rear....no warning.....just whizzed by....the last one KICKED FELLA as he went past!!!!!! Fella wouldn't hurt a fly, and he's a little shy of people anyway. That boy is lucky I couldn't catch him! Quote
Smooshie Posted October 7, 2002 Posted October 7, 2002 Poor Fella!! :( I too have a gang of delinquent boys in my neighborhood......lucky for me they seem to think that Loki is a vicious man eater  For once I am not offended by that, since they steer way clear of myself and my property......and in my free time I stand Loki in front of a mirror and make him practice his  look, without breaking into a Boxer grin   Quote

Bensam Posted October 7, 2002 Posted October 7, 2002 Some years ago I got my first Afghan, this back in the days when Affie temperament was a bit suss. My children were all old enough to understand the rules about Kush, if he's asleep, speak to wake him, never go near when he is eating, etc. One morning my son, 12 years old at the time, came out of his bedroom with a graze on his chin and said Kush bit him. My first question," what did you do to Kush?". "My fault, he was asleep and I pushed him off my bed" he said. Bathed his chin, put on a sticking plaster and off to school he went. He came in after school and said "you had better not go up to school for a while". "Why not?" says me. "Well, the teacher asked what happened to my face and I told her Mum's dog bit me". She said, "I hope your Mother had the dog put down". My delightful son replied "No, but I nearly got a hiding!" Needless to say, I avoided the school for some time  . Quote
