deepseasnake Posted September 28, 2002 Posted September 28, 2002 when we see "bite" training pics and after the dog has his "bite" exactlly how bad are they hit with that stick? I realize its a MUST as in take down work no one will just sit there with the dogs latched on their arms but is there such thing as excessive? Quote
Dad4duchess Posted September 28, 2002 Posted September 28, 2002 I don't think they really hit the dog, they had a special on animal planet once about police dogs and the trainers just swing the stick around. 8) Quote
gooeydog Posted September 28, 2002 Posted September 28, 2002 I haven't seen much bitework at all in person, but from what I understand, the use of the stick depends on the dog. I think the stick is only introduced when the dog is confident in the bite, and it is used in a manner not to damage the dogs confidence. I suppose it would also depend on the handlers, some may be more "nurturing", whereas others may really push the dog to see how they respond. Quote
Hobbit Posted September 28, 2002 Posted September 28, 2002 Deep, the stick is used to get the dog used to distractions --- being hit, poked, stabbed at, etc...so they know NOT to release. They are only to release when the handler tells them to release. The dogs are not hit hard during their initial training. But understand, if they are to be used in the K-9 section of the police dept as a partner....then it is imparative that the trainer know that if, or when, this dog is hit (in a real type situation) if he is going to tuck tail and run .... leaving his handler, OR if he is going to go "postal" and be uncontrollable. A gun (with blanks) is also used and fired to see if the dog is going to give up and run or be distracted. Quote
deepseasnake Posted September 28, 2002 Author Posted September 28, 2002 hobbit, thats what I thought, its not nice to look at in these pictures, especialy since this dog only competes in bite work and does not perform "bite" duties, but yes it is definatly an essential part of police work. Guess they wouldn't do much good if they let go everytime they were hit  Quote
Hobbit Posted September 28, 2002 Posted September 28, 2002 Deep --- I just PM'd ya, open you can open the picture. Quote
