Horsefeathers, Do you have any knowledge about the Dekalb county shelter. On their website they say that they are a no kill facility and I've checked their website and the dogs don't change much, but I want to volunteer somewhere I can do some good and so far I have heard BAD things about the various Atlanta shelters. If not Deklab, any suggestions? There are lots of rescues groups here so I supposed it wouldn't matter, but I thought that asking couldn't hurt

Science doc, I don't know anything about the Dekalb Co. shelter. I lived in Dekalb Co. for a little while (Bouldercrest Rd. area), but never had any dealings with any of the shelters in that area as I couldn't have a pet at the time and the job I had at that time left me with NO free time. I've heard rotten things about the Atlanta area shelters, but I think it's great that you are wanting to make a difference. I honestly am a person who believes that all things happen for a reason and, sooner or later, you'll end up where your presence is most needed. I wish I knew something that could be of help.

OH!OH! <Corgilady frantically raising hand> I know about the Atlanta shelters.....at least one! It would be in Marietta, or the closest to there. Its' a WONNNNNNderful place. They post little notes on the front of the cages, with a "letter" from the dog...makes you want to take all of them home. I know of a chow who got thrown out of the back of a truck on the highway. His hip and leg were shattered. That shelter had him all fixed up at great expense and adopted him out (great dog!!!). They had to exercise him a lot to keep his leg from going stiff, and also medicate him and clean the (really ugly) wound. With all those dogs I was surrprised they could keep up with it, but they did.

They also have an auction for the purebred dogs, and a few of the others. I am not sure how the auction works.

Please do! I'm contemplating volenteering at another shelter (local humane society) as well...But it's a kill shelter. There aren't very many NO kill shelters around here.

Just not sure how hubby will take it with me being away from the poor guy for a little longer than normal...
