Guest Anonymous Posted September 24, 2002 Posted September 24, 2002 Hey, I have a question for you all, if you have time. I ask you all so many questions I should just join the forum. I have what I thought was a five month old Doberman/German Shorthaired Pointer mix. The front third of her muzzle is light doberman rust brown with white brindled in. She has doberman eyebrow spots, cheek spots and undertail bum spot. She is chocolate brown from right in front of her eyes, almost all of her back and most of her tail, which has a white tip. Her legs are same dark brown at the very top ( and here's where I was sure she was pointer) and she has pointer-like spots ( doberman rust brown and chocolate brown mixed) on a white background all up and down her legs. Like I said she is five months and about 30-31 pounds, she is fairly tall, probably 19-20 inches at shoulder. Not only that but she is tall and slender with that exact build you would expect this cross to have and she acts, in many distinctive ways, just like you would expect this cross to act. Now here is the thing, I just talked to a GSP breeder who told me how big pups her age were (and she is exactly that weight) but she said that if she is a dobie mix she CANNOT genetically have the ticking of the GSP because the Dobies don't carry that gene........."a dobie/shorthair cross cannot be ticked as the dobies don't carry the gene for this pattern.'' Anyway, can anyone think of anything that would be giving her all the spotted markings all over her legs and chest (forgot to mention above, her whole chest is white with dense dark brown ticking) ? I don't know of any dogs other than Dobies and Rottweilers that have that eyebrow/cheek/bum spot thing and she has a very Doberman looking head shape. And she is definitely much more tall and slender Vs. powerful and stocky. Sorry this is so long, I am mystified as to what else she could be.....Maybe I should just deal with it, should have named her Mystery Dog instead of Dresden... Thanks for your help if you can help and if you can't I'll just have to deal with it. THANKS. Quote
Rowie-the-Pooh Posted September 24, 2002 Posted September 24, 2002 Sorry can't help ya there... :( Check out sites and do some research..It'd be fun! i HAve lots of fun doin research! Just be happy! Quote
Carolk9s Posted September 24, 2002 Posted September 24, 2002 We want EIGHT photos! :P Just kidding but would love to see at least one! I do not know squat about color genetics but I'd be cautious about saying words like NEVER and IMPOSSIBLE when it comes to mixes especially Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted September 24, 2002 Posted September 24, 2002 Sorry can't help you with that either but why don't you check out the breeds on Dogomania and see if your dog resembles any. I know it may take a while but if you really want to know that bad I'm sure it will be worth it. Quote
Hobbit Posted September 25, 2002 Posted September 25, 2002 Marble, I would very much like to see a photo because Australian Cattle Dogs have this type ticking that you are referring too, if I'm understanding you correctly. They also have a white tip on their tail, as does the Border Collie. Some Border Collies exhibit ticking coloration, also. Quote
bk_blue Posted September 25, 2002 Posted September 25, 2002 She sounds like a lovely dog- but I can't help either... Black and tan Dachshunds have very similar markings to Dobes- that's why we call them Bonsai Dobermanns  but they're just a BIT too small for your dog!!! Re: the genetics thing. Is it possible that your dog's parents were also crosses? That would confuse the issue a bit... About time you joined the forum Marble- come on, you know you want to! :D Quote
gooeydog Posted September 25, 2002 Posted September 25, 2002 Could she maybe be a Catahoula mix? I don't know much about them, but I think they can have colors like what you're talking about, and would be about that size... Quote
Gordonmom Posted September 25, 2002 Posted September 25, 2002 Gordon Setters are also always black with the tan muzzle, and tan spots on eyes, legs and bum. But they have long hair. I would post a picture, but it is going to take me years to figure out how! Quote
