1. After her period(sorry im mentioning this ppl!) does that mean she goes into heat?????????? I think so?

2. Does it hurt? How can I help?

3. How long will it last??

Don't worry...we have electicaly controled gates. They can only be opened from our house phone. (COOL huh?):D So, don't expect any puppies from Rowie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Second: PLEASE don't call me an irresponsible doggy owner...its like your splitting my heart out when you say that!!!!!!!!!!!!! :(
When I got her she wasn't spayed...so don't blame me!

we just went thru this with Lexie about a month ago. and it seemed like it lasted forever. In all actuality it was about three weeks which I think is the norm. I think they say that it lasts anywhere between 14-21 days. I don't think that it hurts them much, if even at all. But I did notice that her behavior changed a little during that time. Usually she's very playful with my other dog Rocky(don't worry he's neutered). But during that whole 3 week period she just kind of wanted to be left alone. Anyway, since it is so messy we invested in a doggie diaper. Very good idea. It's a little denim diaper that we picked up at PetSmart. They sell doggie pantyliners to put on the inside, but they are a complete rip off. You pay 8.00 for like 20 of them and they don't cover that much of the inside of the diaper. We had to line 3 of them up on the inside. It was ridiculous. So then I thought...Why don't we buy ordinary maxi pads that women use? Great idea. They are huge and if you buy the ones with wings, you'll never have to worry about them falling out of the diaper. And they are so cheap (3.00 for 30).

I think that the bleeding generally lasts for a week, and it is the two weeks or so after that that you really have to watch out, as this is when they are ready to mate.
You've also gotta be ready for a possible phantom pregnancys and mood changes etc that come after the heat cycle
