corgilady Posted September 21, 2002 Posted September 21, 2002 Has anyone seen the Dogo article about the pekinese (SP?) It was the breed of the moment and it looked like a .... sheep  ... or maybe an angora rabbit. Maybe it's my computer screen (ancient relic) but I am not seeing a DOG there...are you? Quote
Smooshie Posted September 21, 2002 Posted September 21, 2002 LOL...my mom used to have 2 Pekes, and they literally look like dustmops with eyes (very very large eyes) .Apparently the Chinese emperor originally used the breed to guard the palace (my guess is that they used to be MUCH larger, and have been bred down to the toy dog we know today)....My mom's Pekes THOUGHT they were big dogs though.Very bold and assertive and yes....YAPPY  Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted September 22, 2002 Posted September 22, 2002 I heard that they were guard dogs in a different way than we think of it today. We all know that dogs are good judge of character/intent/fear. Well, these dogs were kept in the huge sleeves of the owners, hidden from the view of visitors. When sitting in a room, to receive & converse with guests, bad intent could be picked up by the Pekes. If a sudden move to hurt the master was made, the dog could bite the attacker, giving the owner the necessary distraction/time to defend themselves. Quote
