My jack russell terrier puppy is almost 6 months old. Is that to young to get her stripped?

Stripping is the removal of coat hairs.

I spoke with a friend/breeder and she said to let a professional groomer take a look at her first before you strip her. Sometimes, depending on the individual dog, this could be too early, or just right.

I wasn't quite sure on the age Hobbit! I know you do not do Giant Schnauzers that early..

She said it just depended a lot on the hair coat and genetics. I know she has some that aren't stripped until they are quite a bit older.

Personally, when I was little and mom would be mad.....brushing of even short hair was a stripping!! :o I used to beg for flat tops!!

It makes for a better looking coat (use it in shows mostly) Lets the new hair come in takes out the dead hair!!

Stripping is the removal of coat hairs.

And why would you want to do this?

It's a show dog thing. It is said to improve the coat texture and help it lay correctly. Same thing as pulling the mane of a horse (which I refuse to do and stopped showing western pleasure horses because of it).

Wrap a comb around a few strands of your hair and give it a yank. Now, does it hurt ----- HE!! YEAH, IT HURTS! Like having your hair yanked out during a bar fight. :o

The normal pet JRT isn't stripped, just the show dogs. My friend swears it doesn't hurt, but the first time I saw her do it --- the dog was some kinda uncomfortable. The next time, she picked up the stripping comb, she took off and hid.

If it was just dead hair....wouldn't the same be accomplished with brushing? or maybe using a rubber mit?

Why do people always insist "it doesnt hurt the dog"? Ear cropping, stripping, plucking poodles ear hairs.... OF COURSE IT HURTS!!! What, just because they don't say 'ouch' they don't feel the pain?
On another note, mouse, getting a dog spayed after its first season is a BAD IDEA! Waiting for the bitch to go into season once increases the likelyhood of ovarian cancer by 40%!!!!! Each time the bitch is in season after that it increases more and more.

There are still alot of vets that will not spay a bitch until AFTER her first heat cycle.

Although I've never met one, if I ever do I will never take my dogs to them. These vets are probably slack and not very well trained. I would assume the reason for this is because it is easier to operate when a dog has matured and so they don't want to do it the hard way.

Most Vets in the UK like a bitch to have had a season BEFORE it is spayed
and then half way between the next.
Each country has different opinions and rules on things.
Prior to reading about spaying on this site, i would not have had a Bitch
spayed untill before her first season.

Ps... i think it would be almost impossible to find a vet in the UK who would spay a puppy before its first season,,, but,,, i will see what i can find out.

Yeah Roo that is mostly how it is here in Texas. There are some vets that will spay/neuter before 8 wks.

Okay, imagine a person having a hysterectomy or being casterated at the age of 6 months old. Puppies and small children are almost the same, still babies.

My thinking is all with Roo. Again, we don't have small dogs and our working dogs are athletes and we may have a female that is so athletic that she is 3 yrs old and still has not cycled. She is healthy, just no body fat --- all muscle. Our dogs normally have their first heat cycle around 11 to 12 months old.

Do other places (England, Uk, NL...etc) have places like "Animal Birth Clinics"?

There are some here in Texas that do nothing but spay and neuter. It's bring'em in by 8am, out by 5pm. I've never taken anything to one of these places, but some are ran by reputable vets and the cost is reasonable, very reasonable.

Shave him first, maybe you can save a few dollars! :P

For our Anatolians, they weighed 80lbs at the time, it was $80.00 each. So, hum, sounds like it was a dollar per pound!!

Sorry, I didn't know that it was common practice over there to spay after the first season.
The vets here reccomend they get done before the first season to prevent cancer later in life. Makes sence to me.

I have had Border Terriers for a number of years and they are a breed who's coat gets stripped. Some need very little stripping, just keeping the dead hair removed but if they are inclined to have a softer coat then it is needed more often. With the Border coat no amount of brushing will remove all of this and the dog will quite often get very itchy if it is left. A few that I know of have been clipped but this can lead to skin irritations and the coat never seems to come back correctly. Some dogs will 'blow' their coats all at once and others keep losing nearly all year round. If the stripping is done on a 'need to' basis it does not cause discomfort to the dog as you are only removing dead hair which taken between thumb and forfinger in small quantities in the direction the hair grows comes away very easily. It is only when someone tries to strip out the growing hair that naturally pain is caused. So with this breed the main thing is to keep the coat tidy at all times and a little often is the way to go. It's Terrier coat so would imagine this would apply to most of the Terriers.

Stripping and spay/neuter....both good topics for discussion. I am working on a magazine article about the benefits of early spay/neuter....if any of you can back up what you said with facts(like statistics) or if your vet wouldnl't mind being quoted, I could sure use the help!

Thanks!

Thanks Bensam for the info on coat stripping. I did not feel it was really uncomfortable as I've seen it being done at shows and the dogs were generally ignoring the person doing it. Like you said, when it's done as an ongoing maintenance of the coat, it does not bother the dog. Heck in regular brushing of Jesse if I unexpectedly run across a snag in his undercoat it pulls and he lets me know it!

Corgi, I would love to read the article. Are you writing it for a magazine? I would love to do something like that but I am not that proficient in English.

yep...write articles for magazines...I'm not proficient either :)
