bk_blue Posted September 20, 2002 Posted September 20, 2002 you are on a roll K! I read something similar at PETA's website. Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted September 21, 2002 Posted September 21, 2002 It seems to me that I heard a similar story years ago. They were protesting Pharmaceutical companies doing testing on dogs, cats & rabbits. :o :x I had no idea that this was still going on!! Quote
bk_blue Posted September 21, 2002 Author Posted September 21, 2002 I believe that Pfizer still conducts tests on animals. Don't know about the others. Quote
daisykatep Posted September 21, 2002 Posted September 21, 2002 :eviThis sort of thing is going on all over the world. If you want to know more (this is not pleasant but I feel more people should know about these disgusting practices) please go to, www.shac.net/ Let me know what you think ! Pat. Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted September 21, 2002 Posted September 21, 2002 Okay I am going to throw in the oppostion for a debate (we have discussed this once but..) Okay if a lab was going to test a medicine would they not have to and want to have a very healthy and disease free (or as close as they could get) animal?? Quote
bk_blue Posted September 22, 2002 Author Posted September 22, 2002 You would think so, Jacsmom, that they would want a healthy animal to do tests on. However I still feel that the majority of animal testing is unnecessary (I don't know enough about cure-for-AIDS-cancer-etc. animal testing though to make up my mind about it), and no animal, whether it is on its last legs or in its prime, should be subjected to experiments we humans would not conduct on ourselves. If this is labelled "equating" (read: devaluing) my life to the life of a pet, then that is fine by me, as to paraphrase James Thurber (I think?), I know several dogs who will go to heaven and very few humans! Quote
Rowie-the-Pooh Posted September 22, 2002 Posted September 22, 2002 :o  :o  :o  :o  :o  Sorry..can't find any right words..... Quote
science_doc Posted September 26, 2002 Posted September 26, 2002 I have put in my two cents on the animal research stuff before and I agree COMPLETELY with the paragraph in this article that animals obtained from shelters would make less than suitable research animals. In order to really get good data from research you have to control and understand the complete history of the subject, end of story. I wish I could find out which companies/universities are using pound animals, because as I have stated before I don't know about any valid labs that are using animals with unknown history. As for animal testing I'm sorry but it's a necessary part of science, most of us do our best to use as few animals as possible and to treat all the animals with the utmost respect and care for the duration of their lives. As always I am open to hear any opinon brought forth and love to debate the pros and cons of what I do, if I didn't believe in it I would find another career. Quote
bk_blue Posted September 27, 2002 Author Posted September 27, 2002 Hey Science Doc, I remember reading a few articles at PETA www.peta.org which discuss the universities, labs etc. that do animal testing, and also the ones that have swapped to computers/VR type stuff, if you're interested... I do believe that there are humane and ethical scientists like yourself there but there are also a lot of them who couldn't give a rat's about the animals... just like pet owners I spose. :( Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted September 28, 2002 Posted September 28, 2002 omy goodness!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  :x this kinda stuff makes me cry sometimes about those homeless animals that are tested since noone wants them!!! :x but i heard seomething like this when they were trying to find a cure for aids would u object about animal cruelty if dogs or any loved animals as pets were used to test for a cure for ur dying beloved family member? i have no idea wat i would do!!!!! Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted September 28, 2002 Posted September 28, 2002 Harley, The dog I rescued fron Texas was picked up as a stray, Glad he's in good hands now! All the more reason for owners to spay/neuter their animals. If more people were responsible for spaying/neutering their pets, there would not be such a surplus out there for the labs! Quote
bk_blue Posted September 29, 2002 Author Posted September 29, 2002 Absolutely- and if we all neutered and spayed, then that would almost eradicate the need for shelters in the first place, and we wouldn't have to see and hear awful things about how these poor pets are killed. :( Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted September 29, 2002 Posted September 29, 2002 What is everyone's opinion on PETA?? Just for curiousity.... Quote
bk_blue Posted September 29, 2002 Author Posted September 29, 2002 Morrissey supports them, so they must be doing something right... Seriously... They are a wealth of information but can get a little too extreme for my liking, maybe they have to be to get their point across? They make me feel guilty that although I am an animal lover, I am BAD because I eat meat and wear leather and am not a total vegan... (I am all for free speech but do not like being preached at and told I am a sadistic bitch for drinking milk!) Quote
corgilady Posted September 30, 2002 Posted September 30, 2002 I agree....PETA's intentions are good but I don't support their over-zealous actions. We should never hurt people, any more than we should hurt animals! Quote
science_doc Posted September 30, 2002 Posted September 30, 2002 I despise PETA. They are too extreme and I know of several labs which have been completely destroyed by their acts. What I don't get is their actions often end in a brutal death for the very animals they claim they are trying to save. For example, in Wisconsin (where I was was born) their favorite stunt was to break into mink farms and let loose all those poor mink! They would 1. get CRUSHED by cars, 2. get eat'in by hawks (how long can a white animal avoid a predator in the middle of summer?). 3. Worst of all they would make it to the woods and starve to death waiting for the farmer to bring them their food. Anyway, I realize that my opinion of them is biased, but one of the places where I worked I had to wear a badge so the company would know my whereabouts at all times so when the PETA bomb blast went off they could tell my family if I was in the buliding or not, really used to FREAK me out! My final blather is that when they do destroy the data from a lab all the animals which have been euthanized for an experiment become a COMPLETE WASTE, wasn't what they were trying to prevent in the first place? Sorry if this offended anyone this group just gets my hackles up  Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted September 30, 2002 Posted September 30, 2002 Oh my god! That mink thing happened recently in Iowa near my birth town.....Waverly. Now, the minks are free, but only to die because they were raised in captivity and know nothing but that life. Anyone see Armageddon? The beginning where Bruce Willis is playing golf trying to hit the PETA boat...and his comment about the amount of diesel used and polution put out on the boat PETA was on? I an very for their intentions, but yeah, they are a little too hard core for me. Quote
