What kind of dog...

What kind of dog do they use at airports to keep the birds off the runways?

My friend might grow her own vineyard and her husband said they'd need a dog to keep the deer away and they were thinking of a heeler.

Their labs wont work...one just wants to be a lap dog and the other one is too busy trying to catch airplanes or eating tomatoes off the vine.

I have seen many Border Collies do that job! They seem to love it! As far as a heeler I am not sure... :-?

They should be aware that fencing is a safer solution than dog chasing deer. In many areas a dog chasing deer even on its own property can be legally shot by anyone. Its against many state laws for dogs to harass wildlife (except in specific hunting season instances).
Another big issue so they get the dog and it decides chasing deer is not fun as it never catches them - then what? its not a housepet its an outdoor dog serving no purpose.
And what about it packing up with other dogs and bringing down deer which happens all too often when loose dogs mix it up with deer? My local game warden had an article in the paper one winter about the (warning graphic verbal image ahead) horror of finding the intestines including the unborn fawn of a pregnant doe strewn across the ground by the pack of dogs that disembowelled her before she died some distance beyond where the pack hit her.

Oh my.

Never fear, this pup would be their loving pet as well. He/she would be an inside dog most of the time, just as their labs are. They are very good and caring of animals.

Honestly, I doubt this is something they will end up doing, but we were just wondering what this breed would be (at airports) and weren't sure where on the net to looks...so I said I'd ask you guys!!

Deer are beautiful creatures. My dad is a deer hunter. It saddens me when I know he's got one hanging in his garage, but I also understand the need. A few years ago the government hired sharp shooters in our area to take care of the deer population. Don't go there.

Border Collies are the number one dogs being used by airports to keep the ducks, geese and other avians off of the runaway. More Kelpies are also being utilized as "shoo dogs" or "goose dogs" or "duck dogs".

Take a look at this website: http://birdstrike.bcrescue.org/sunsentinel2.html

An Australian Cattle Dog would work, but may be too rough on the deer --- if it corners the deer.

A "deer" fence is the best advice. A fence will be needed regardless, because it is not (highly not) advisable to allow a herding bred dog free roam of the country side (any breed of dog for that matter).
