Guest Anonymous Posted September 18, 2002 Posted September 18, 2002 If you are a vegetarian or veegan do you still feed your dog a carnivorous diet? Please don't think that I am knocking your beleif,or principles because I am not. I am simply interested to gain some input on this. Some dogs do choose themselves to avoid eating meat, preffering veg only! But if you do raise your dog as a vegetarian or veegan hound, what sort of diet do you give them? And do you think the pet food manufacturers cater for this? It would also be interesting to know if a meat free diet is healthier! Do as many dogs on this diet suffer from cancer, digestive or skin problems as those on a meat diet? Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted September 18, 2002 Posted September 18, 2002 I agree. They should be fed meat. I'm not a vegetarian, but don't eat much meat. I don't like vegetables................. :x Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted September 18, 2002 Posted September 18, 2002 Gigi what do you eat?? :-? :P Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted September 18, 2002 Posted September 18, 2002 CRAP! No, most of my meat is chicken. I am a bread/noodle/cheese person. and CHOCOLATE of course! Today I had a chicken sandwich and fries at a local joint. With ranch dressing. NO ketchup/mustard/condiments/GROSS. And a chocolate malt! [/list] Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted September 18, 2002 Posted September 18, 2002 Okay just checking...I love chicken and turkey and most veggies!! :D As for the dog I would feed the dog some kind of meat due to the protein and nutrients found in meat.. I know lots of vegetarians eat beans and lentils for protein that is lacking from not eating meat. I would truly hate to feed Jac (my lab) beans :D !! I also have to say that cancer and things of that nature would have something to do with the environment along with genetics! Quote

Do as many dogs on this diet suffer from cancer, digestive or skin problems as those on a meat diet? I have only seen a couple of dogs that were raised as 'vegetarians' and I have to say they were not in the condition I would prefer a dog to be in considering health weight etc Dogs (and people) are designed to have meat in their diets - you can see that in the teeth, in the digestion system length and in the enzymes and in the diet proclivities of both species. Sure we both can handle other things in our diets - humans being designed to do so even more than dogs - its part of the adaptability that has made both our species so successful. Quote
Aroura Posted September 19, 2002 Posted September 19, 2002 Interesting fact - although by NO MEANS do I want to encourage vegetarian dogs! - the oldest dog in the world is a VEGETARIAN border collie in Brittain. It must have a VERY carefully thought out diet, combine that with luck and good genetics.... I still find it hard to believe. Its a bad thing though, how many people will hear this and put their dog on a vegetarian diet? I wish that story had never been published... Quote
Rowie-the-Pooh Posted September 19, 2002 Posted September 19, 2002 I personnally do not think that a Veggie diet is good for a...nor healthy. As Newfiemom said, Dogs have teeth for tearing meat...that's what they were born to do..Wolve's..thier ancesters....eat meat don't they? Anyway, without meat, they do miss out on alot of nutritional food. Aroura: How old was the Collie? I'de like to know cuz it ounds interesting! A colliege of mine claims that her Pomaranian is 80 human years! Yeah right, like i'll belive that! Anyway...how old was the collie? Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted September 19, 2002 Posted September 19, 2002 I must have missed the story about the collie does anyone know its age? My dogs always have their meal of tripe and mixer. With raw carrots as one of their treats. There is apparently a new vegaterian dog food being marketed has anyone else heard of this, seen it or tried it? The reason I am interested in this is because I gave a treat to a friends dog ( asked first of course) it wasn't until he gulped it down that she asked me if I had given him a vegie snack because she is a vegaterian and only gives the dog a meat free diet! Anyway thanks for your input to my post, I am not by rights a guest; my username is Jay Tee but every time I try to post with my name I get a sorry message and it dosn't work! :( Quote

mouseatthebusstop Posted September 19, 2002 Posted September 19, 2002 :) In the UK they do sell a dog veggie dried mix. I feel dogs should be fed meat THE WILD DOG WOULD NOT LIVE ONLY ON VEGATABLES    Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted September 20, 2002 Posted September 20, 2002 newfiemom napisaĆ(a):Jacsmom, Beneful has never even seen a vegetable. The vegtables that they claim are in the food rank 17th and 18th on the ingredient list. The first ingredient is corn (not a good sign). They also put sugar in the food. As far as meat, it contains chicken by products. Talk about false advertising!!! You have to figure they will 'waffle' on ingredients anc chicken byproducts can be good or bad depending on the company's choice of vendors but corn is certainly on my list of vegetables and sugar is a vegetable product. But then I'm one of the faithful who believes that chocolate is a vegetable too ;-) Quote

Aroura Posted September 22, 2002 Posted September 22, 2002 The collie is 27 years old. I think the woman with the Pomeranian must be dreaming.... how old is she??? I've heard something about a vegetarian dog food in the making, that was a few years back so I guess maybe its out now. I don't see how people can get away with making a vegetarian dog food, its outright WRONG and I wouldn't be suprised if there is an uproar and it gets taken off the market. I makes me so mad when people push their beliefs on dogs!!! :x Quote
Guest roo Posted September 22, 2002 Posted September 22, 2002 When reading the dog papers today apparently Pedigree has started a vegi dog food but is seems the main place it is going to is india due to their beliefs etc, will find the article and re read it and let you all know. Roo Quote
