Okay, this just be me....but I think Dogo forum was down this time to make some changes. Changes like: I couldn't reply to a thread unless I was a member!!!

So, I membered up.

Well, I tried to post several different times and it asked for a Username and Password. I could read the threads, but not reply. SO, maybe the request that was posted in another topic was honored. OR, my computer is screwing with me.......

Nice to see you as a member now hobbit :D
Gorgeous dog in the picture, looks a bit like my Tessa!

The dog in the picture is Sammy. She is a Kelpie. Here's a better picture of her: about 1/2 a second after I took this picture, she crouched into an intense position. I was too late on the trigger, she was off herding the goats. Some people think this is an aggressive dog stance, but it's just a working Kelpie characteristic.

True Hobbitt...But just used to get a kick out of the whole thing. I think if we were all in agreement with rude guest, she would probably tell us we were wrong.

Exactly! You know, that is actually sad. She/he had some good information at times. I still think it was Nicki --- because it was the same writing style.

Anyway --- it is unfortunate that some people feel the need to belittle and be hateful to other people so they can build themselves up and feel better about themselves.

I'll argue with the best of them....but ONLY if I'm right and never when I'm wrong.

Thats a beautiful kelpie Hobbit.
There is a kelpie up the road that crouches whenever it wants you to throw a ball, and then when you do the dog crouches before the ball and only picks it up and brings it back on command.
It came from a farm but its owner moved into town, I think it would have been a beautiful working dog.

Hobbit, your kelpie is beautiful! She looks very muscular for a kelpie? Must be all that work ;)
There is a kelpie who comes to the dog park and all it does is bark (that high-pitched herding bark) for its frisbee to be thrown, a bit noisy but very cute and intelligent :)

Posted

bk -- that is interesting about the barking. Our Kelpies work very silent, they do not bark. I do have one that will bark on command. Their stance and stare is enough to get the livestock moving without all that barking.

Maybe this one is a cross? I'm not sure. But it is noisy! Seeing as it is obviously not used for farm work either maybe that would account for its barking? But you're right, that kelpie stare is famous (or infamous ;)). They are great dogs, one of my favourites, though I couldn't have one unless I moved to the bush!

I think it is the non working kelpies that bark alot. All the obedience classes I have been to there have been kelpies or kelpie crosses who just bark and bark. Dogs that are born to work and don't have propper mental stimulation often pick up bad habbits, like barking or digging.

I don't know about kelpies, but the non-working border collie barks incessantly! Seriously, Hobbit has some beautiful kelpies. I can't find the thread now, but one of them had a tan face and was a darker shade? That's my favorite. I've never seen one in person.

Oh yeah, you are so right about the mental stimulation, lack of that is.

Are these Kelpies the "Show or Bench" Kelpies? They were inbred so much by the show people (looking for one trait) that they actually created another breed --- totally different from the "working" Kelpie. The Bench/show Kelpies look different, act different, and are just different in all ways from the working Kelpie. That's mostly the type (Bench/show) of Kelpie you'll see in the obedience classes and sports dog classes (that's what we see in the US, anyway). What about there?

The Bench/show Kelpies are usually solid dark red or solid black. A boxier look, with a short, small, pointed nose (reminds you of a spitz nose), small feet, more of a square head.
