bk_blue Posted August 31, 2002 Posted August 31, 2002 Glad to know the dogs are ok, what about the kids! Also, I've been told that onion and avocado are toxic to dogs... and of course chocolate... (actually I wish chocolate was toxic to ME! :D ) Quote
deepseasnake Posted September 3, 2002 Author Posted September 3, 2002 what exactly is it about chocolate that hurts dogs? Quote
bk_blue Posted September 3, 2002 Posted September 3, 2002 I've always been told chocolate is toxic to dogs and can kill them, it's not actually the chocolate itself but a chemical in the chocolate called theobromine. Theobromine is toxic to a dog when it ingests between 100 and 150 milligrams per kilogram of body weight. Different types of chocolate contain different amounts of theobromine, so it would take 20 ounces of milk chocolate to kill a 20 pound dog, but only two ounces of cooking chocolate or 6 ounces of semisweet chocolate. (taken from ://www.howstuffworks.com/question348.htm) Also check out this link: http://www.k9haven.org/poison_plant.html More info about chocolate and about a million plants and household products that are poisonous to dogs. Quote
