HEART MURMUR HELP!!!

I just took my two 5 month old Pits to the vet for their 3 rd shots. While there the vet said that hercules was okay, but that Hollywood has a Heart Murmur now. Hollywood was fine a month ago when they went to the vet. The vet says I can have an ultrasound done on him before his surgery for neutering if I want. I said how much is that and she says $400.00 I saod are you sure he has a heart murmur? Sometimes I think thay make up stuff so they can just grab our money. Anyway what is an ultrasound going to do, but show an xray of his heart. It doesn't change anything about his heart if he really has a heart murmur.

What do you think?

:( sorry to hear of your problem...now if the real issue causing the murmur is a mitral valve prolapse...you need to insure the dog is on antibiotics whenever any procedure such as surgery or teeth cleaning is done.

K - I was sorry to read of your daughter's heart problems and I hope she's doing well.

Hollywood - There are different degrees of heart murmurs. Some are so slight that they are missed. I think you need to find out the rating of Hercules. Some dogs w/slight murmurs as pups eventually go on to have no murmurs. If your vet thinks he should have an ultrasound, I would go to a cardiologist for this and the evaluation. I've never had a dog go in for a cardiac ultrasound, but I have had one go in for internal organ ultrasounds due to mast cell tumors, and I think the highest amount I paid for the ultrasound was $150. Now perhaps that price varies for diffent ultrasounds that I don't know. I do think, however, that it should be done so that you know what course of meds, etc. you need to follow for the future. Have you notified the breeder of your pups? Reputable breeders will definitely want to know and you should also ask if any other pups from this litter have been diagnosed w/murmurs. Good luck and I wish you and Hercules well and good news.

I'd suggest getting a second opinion before spending the money & putting your baby under the stress of an ultrasound.
Definitely get the rating of how bad it is supposed to be
just my opinion
