Wow, in trying to research the "toy munchkin" dogs (just curious....because someone said they are not what they are purported to be) I found some websites where people are breeding mutts, and advertising them for sale!

what do you guys think about that? I am shocked; didn't know it took place ON PURPOSE. I thought there were enough unwanted purebreds out there????

I am not referring to breeding closely related breeds, say to get a broader muzzle or deeper chest or something, but just crossing up all kinds of dogs....here's a link....

Yep...sad isn't it??....buying a dog is becoming a lot like ordering a pizza....you pick the ingredients, they "make" you the "perfect" dog
The saddest thing about it is some of these "breeders" are charging 5 or 6 hundred dollars for these mixes, while there are thousands of these same mixed breeds (puppies AND adults) put to sleep every day in shelters that would cost only a FRACTION of that to take home. :(

We've had this discussion many times before, I think it is generally agreed by all that it is very, very wrong.
Although some of the mixes they make are very cute, so are pedigree's and shelter mutts alike, there is no need for it.

I agree, theyre REALLY cute. I didn't want anyone to think I was knocking the dogs, just the system....so many cuties in the shelter as well....

so many of the cuties in the shelter came from those misbreeders making mixes originally its not funny - alas irresponsible breeder is about the only term viable for someone making mixes on purpose.

Well Personally I can see some point in intentional Cross breeds if it has a purpose other than just to look pretty. If it's for some sort of working dog such as I saw one website where a guy cross bred Staffys and a type of mastiff and more often than not got a BIG strong dog to work with Bulls (as in the Cow type  )

these dogs had the size with the correct personality to work with these bulls.

But don't forget that all mordern Dogs where bred in the same way in the past ;)

just MHO

And his point in attempting to recreate the bull mastiff was?
No mixbreeder today is doing what was done years ago in creating dog breeds - none has the finances, the area or the wit (it seems anyway) to do it nor the fortitude to properly cull dogs that don't meet their criteria.

All those puppies are cute, but what puppy isn't? It's sad to see the new "pizza dog" is becoming so popular, but as anybody who has gone to see a litter of puppies to "just look" and ended up with one in the back seat of thier car that same day.... well...
Although I would certainly hesitate to pay 599 for a dog without papers!
(most likly I would laugh in thier face and tell them to get a life! :o )

Now I would have to agree with James to an extent. Where I live there are many farmers who cross kelpie with cattle dogs or border collies to produce better working dogs. BUT this is a different matter all together to people breeding thier purebreds to other purebreds and selling them to pet shops or unknowing people at a higher price... or even at a lower price. It is not just the fact they are trying to scam people that is the problem, but that they are corrupting the breed in the first place.
Working dogs and pet dogs are two completely different things. I know a farmer who lives in town, he keeps his four kelpies out at his property and they would be lucky to be fed 3 - 4 times a week. Is this cruelty? In my oppinion, no. It is what these dogs are bred for, and they do not expect anything more. Try doing that with any other breed and the dog will go crazy. Just enforcing my statement that comparing working dogs to pet dogs is like comparing an apple to a banana
