Horsefeathers! Posted August 8, 2002 Posted August 8, 2002 Well, now, let's see.... it would depend on what you mean by bad skin. Any number of things can cause skin problems. Allergies, fleas, diet, mange, thyroid problems, etc. I would think you'd need a vet's exam to find out exactly what's going on with your dog's skin since there are so many possibilities. I have a bully/boxer mix that gets skin infections about once or twice a year, usually during the warmer weather. The vet believes it is just basically seasonal allergies. For her, it's as simple as giving her something for the itching and a round of antibiotics to clear the infection... no big deal, really. I have another dog who has major allergies, had to have lots of testing done, changed diet, allergy shots, the whole works. Now THAT was a pain. Another of my dogs had demodectic mange when we adopted him and that is treated another way entirely. Still, another dog of mine has Cushing's disease and has a different kind of skin problem. Some diets promote skin problems, as well. Anyway, it just depends on what the "bad skin" really is. Good luck with Milo and I hope it's only something minor that can be easily treated. Quote

That being said, I can't believe your vet just gave you some lotion and when that didn't work said "he just has bad skin". I've never had a vet who wouldn't immediately take blood and rule out a thyroid problem. A lot of dogs develop hypothyroid in their twilight years and a full thyroid panel should be run. Please switch vets. Is your dog neutered? Could be hormonal. Most vets will also start with an food allergy related treatment too, changing dog foods to all natural (Like fish & potatoe based kibble). If the vet is unsuccessful, they will usually send you to an allergist or you can request a referral. They are expensive. In the meantime, you can give your dog 1 tablet of an E vitamin. How often do you bath him? What kind of shampoo are you using. Sometimes in older dogs a flea/tick shampoo is to harsh and they need a special shampoo but not a lot of bathing. Good luck. Quote
Aroura Posted August 8, 2002 Posted August 8, 2002 Is it just like dandruffy? Try adding some canola oil or cod liver oil to the diet, dont overdose with the codliver though. Or try alternating cod liver oil with flaxseed oil. Also add some fatty meat to the diet, such as hamburger mince, some liver and some raw eggs. A whole raw fish once or twice a week may also be beneficial. What are you feeding milo now? I do think you need a new vet though, and soon! Quote
