if they really HAVE to  lol

actually it depends on the dog.....like K pointed out, I'm sure all dogs CAN swim, but there are some boxers that absolutely HATE the water (sheesh...MY boxer tries to avoid PUDDLES and dodge rain drops....makes walking in the rain VERY interesting). Boxers seem to be almost cat-like when it comes to water (cringing and shaking their paws when they get wet)....then there are others I've seen that LOVE to play in the water (though I'm still not sure how much they actually like SWIMMING)....maybe if you raised one around water....??

Actually there are some dog breeds that cannot or rather should not swim - Scottish Terriers I hear have a distressing tendency to drown due to the mismatch in head and body and leg size in the breed.

actually I have seen a pig swim before... did it pretty well, though not as well as most animals. The only animal I know of is a chimp.

All of my previous boxers loved the water and loved to swim. However, we lived at the beach then. I think most can swim, and some just have to be guided and helped for a while. I have several friends w/boxers who live near the beach or rivers and their boxers swim very well.

I believe that it's best to start them at a young age. The older the dog who has not been around water, the mores hesitant I'd believe it to be to swim - not that it actually can't but that it doesn't know what to expect.

Lily will run half a km if she knows there's a puddle!!! She's always getting muddied up, but miraculously by the time we get home she's as clean as a whistle every time!
When it comes to swimming, she wades around but never actually swims... though it is winter here so I havn't been in with her yet!

My Uncles Bull Terrier cross died when it fell out of a boat, I guess if they never learn to swim it doesn't always come naturally. :(
