Aggresive dogs

Why do stupid people always defend dogs that attack? Regarding the recent posts about dog attacks, by Pits, Bullmastiffs etc. How can the owner(s) of such dogs be blamed for the attacks on innocent people as the dogs have been used for fighting, baiting throughout the history of the breeds and are therefore more likely to attack people than say a Labrador or a Chiuahua whose pasts has never been associated with fighting, baiting etc and therefore are not aggressive and don't attack people .unlike the breeds mentioned previously? A child can take a toy away from a bull or mastiff breed and will be attacked no doubt, but take a toy away from a lab or a chiuahua and they won't attack the child.

People need to face facts and realise that supposing their pit, rottweiler or whatever seems the most sweetest thing to them and will never hurt a fly they are wrong and need to stop denying themselves of aggressive nature that those dogs could and DO possess.

Control it, train it, return it or put it down.
that may sound harsh but you need to be.

I am NOT trying to start a fight but it's typical of someone like Sashagirl to say something like that.

I read in a magazine a while back that the USA was planning a Pitbull ban. Whatever came of that?

The worst dog bite I have ever had in my life......came from a Chihuahua! Yep, I was about 4 years old and leaned over to pet my best friends Chihuahua and she attacked me! I had pieces of flesh hanging off me. I didn't want to tell my mom because I loved this dog, we were buds (so I thought). Anyway, my sister told my mom and after she freaked out and rushed me to the ER for about 150 stitches ----- yep sewed my lip back on, fixed my cheek, my ear lobe and reattached a piece of flesh on my collar bone.....whew.....!! AND ALL THIS FROM A CHIHUAHUA. This dog was not trained to KILL people. Me, my friend and her dog all played together, every day. I don't know why she attacked me. I petted her the same as I had from day one. Unfortunately for the dog, she had not had her rabie shots and a city ordinance made the owner send her for testing. I still to this day (20 years later) have the scars, but I didn't then and still don't think the dog should have been put to sleep.

So, I guess I told that story to say: NEVER think that just because it's a Chihuahua that it won't bite ----- ANY DOG WILL BITE!

I think, I'll just make a small response to the guest that started this. You have no facts, no statistics, and no knowledge of the pitbull.

Go look up on the internet sites what breed is responsible for the most bites. A hint is. it is not the pitbull. They get the bad rap because if one does bite (like any other dog is capable of doing), the damage done is usually greater because of the power and force in their jaws.

Plain and simple - people are responsible for proper breeding, training, and socialization. The owners are responsible. No, I don't own a pitbull.

I think the Guest that posted this has never had a pitbull or just ignorant of the breed. Just read the post and you can tell his knowledge of the pit breed. I myself have never had a Pit or AmStaff, but have known many who have them. And never have i seen a breed more loving to their owners and people alike. Although they can be agressive just like any other breed(I have not heard of a breed yet that has never attacked or biten a person) but thats where the training comes in. Socializing and training have made Onyx a perfect example of this(Dobermans too have had a Bad Rap), he is about the biggest whimp out at the park :-? :-? .

I would like to know what site address that inform about dog bites statistics.

Thankyou.

People need to be resposible around all animals. Teach children to be resposible around animals. My neighbors let their child (6) run along my fence line (ON OUR PROPERTY) AND TEASE THE DOGS. !!!! Then scream bloody murder that I'm raising "killer"dogs because they bark ferociously!@

Get with the Tosa's. They are great with kids and other people but will defend their family with their lives if they think they are in danger. I would'nt trade my Yano for the world.

Newfoundlands are gorgeous dogs. I once saw a programme about them where I learned that they have webbed feet, and I thought that they were very beautiful looking dogs but I could'nt cope with all the grooming to keep their coats looking great. I doubt if I'd ever have one due to this as I do not have the time and money to care for such a dog..

Do you breed them? I can imagine that they would be expensive dogs cause of vets bills, foods etc. If they make you happy, all the better for you.

Wow guest! what a silly ,(not to mention, absolutely asinine statement)....I think you've officially won today's award for supreme ignorance!.....ANY dog (yesss,EVEN a "Pit" ) can be properly socialized and trained to become a "Canine Good Citizen"....just like ANY dog (even the gentlest, most even-tempered of breeds) can be ruined by bad ownership and poor handling...making them unpredictable and aggressive...I understand your reasoning about some Breeds being predestined to be fighters, however I think a dog's environment and the quality of ownership have EVERYTHING to do with whether or not this trait shows itself....as a matter of fact,it seems to me that "Pitbulls" (for example),being a fighting breed, were originally bred to be DOG aggressive...NOT human aggressive,so their history seems irrelevent when it comes to human "attacks"...I FIRMLY believe that People are the problem...NOT dogs........just my .02 :-?

I've been down this road before and I'm willing to go again. The above statement is idealistic and completely UNTRUE. Even the best of owners can end up with a dog that cannot become a good pet for anyone.
I suggest you read (for another person's view on this) If Only They Could Speak by Nicholas Dodman and particularly read the chapter on the pitbull from hell which could have been any dominant dog breed quite easily.

My Pittbull/Husky may not be the nicest dog in the world, but he is sweet to me & my family. He stays in a alrge pen al day, I take him for long walks everyday. He loves my 4 year old, Jordan. I trust Scruffy(My dog) With Jordan then I do with most people! Yes he has biten some people buts thats only cuz they were stealing, or drug heads! When little kids are around I do putt he muzzle on him, only to be safe! I trust Scruffy with my Terriers,He is best friends was a beagle. But with large dogs I do not trust him. He is the sweetest dog in the world to me & my family, but he he thinks you are going to hurt me WATCH OUT!!!!!

...........................................................................................................
NOT ALL PITBULLS ARE MEAN! THEY USED TO BE THE ALL AMERICAN DOG,WE NEED TO GIVE THEM ONE MORE TIME TO PROVE IT!

So you are saying that NO PIT BULL can be properly socialized?

I can do nothing but shake my head and feel sorry for you. I am truly happy that I am not ignorant like you. Again I will say, I will not argue with ignorance.

I meant what I said that its not true that 'any dog' can be socialized and trained to become a perfect pet. Some dogs can't be due to their genetic heritage. As you have a pit bull I sincerely hope you comprehend what the breed is and how it is designed to be and that you have lucked out and gotten an atypical dog that won't show any of its heritage as it grows up. Didn't someone here say the litter mate to their pitbull pup was in trouble for fighting in the breeder's kennel of dogs? Doesn't this responsible breeder raise his or her dogs properly?
I cited a reference book to read - have you read it? do you have any proof at all that *any* dog if properly raised will turn out ok? (I know you can't have any because its just not true.) Its just not the way dogs are no matter how much you wish it could be.

note for the moderator
I find it really funny that the moderator blocks out a book chapter title from a highly regarded behaviorist but then lets the other rude posts go on and on and on.

Sasha and everyone... I suggest we ignore the incredibly stupid guest and move on with a topic like...WHAT CUTE AND FUNNY THINGS MY DOG DID TODAY!!! Obviously this guest has no experience or knowledge when it comes to the Pit Bull breed and for that reason I feel sorry for him/her. They are missing out on a great breed of dog. Too bad! All that matters is that we love our Pit Bulls and WE know that they are good dogs. GUEST could say whatever he wants, but it will never make me change my mind about this breed. I have grown up around this breed.

Guest- the forum is censored- the moderators did not deliberately block out the chapter title, it just occurred automatically- the word itself may not have been particularly rude, the forum was even censoring out dogs names recently!!!!!!!!!!!!! :o

I guess gizmo is the meanest damn dog on the block and eat all the neighbor kids right? And when we go to the dog park she rules it there to right?? So your saying gizmo is going to turn on me and blah, blah, blah like every other ignorant t.v. watching human does right...thats what i thought!

Dont come back to me when my pitbull doesn't attackyou!

- Quote from one of the GREAT pitbull owners on this forum! :D

Thank you for the note but the forum censors itself now to block out those nice vocabulary lessons we receive periodically that were totally uncalled for. I am sure everyone can figure out the book title you are referring to as it has been refered to before and it is not that hard to figure out anyway.

Debate it out nicely everyone!! Rudeness is not the answer..

You would be absolutly astounded at how many people I have had back away when I tell them Hazel is an australian shepherd. "Oh those dogs, bark and bite, and they are mean and antisocial" When you see her, cause someday I am going to get pics on her..., you are going to laugh, she's a puppy, she's about as threatening as a teddy bear, and just as lazy. I have only met a few aussies, 50 dogs or so, and each and every one was a loving, outgoing dog who just about takes your face off with a toung! I had never heard of them being agressive, shy maybe, but not agressive.
So I can well imagine the responce for a dog who is constantly in the news for attacking and biting.
My mom was attacked by a black lab when she was a kid.
Simon, my 3 yr old, was ferociously barked at by a retriever mix....
I was attacked by a chuahua.
I have never seen a mean pitt in my life! (not including tv)
avalon I totally agree with you...
Just look at the smile on gizmo, or the loving look on sasha's girls, or that grin on k's guy. To me it says it all.
It's not the breed, or the dog.... it's the owner and the breeder....I know it's been said, but obviously we are not saying it enough!
