I am looking for a large breed that is good with other dogs and children, highly trainable and intelligent, could act as a guard dog (not very important) playful and enjoys a lot of excersise. Giant breeds considered.

If you don't mind a highly active dog for the first 2-4 years, there is nothing like a lab...yellow, black, brown or a Golden Retriever. These breeds are large (males 60+ lbs), they do shed, they are very active, excellent swimmers (they love the water!). They are incredibly wonderful with children, however, they tend to be very active, and, combined with their size, may not be suitable for young children that can be knocked over easily.

They are not great guard dogs, as they will most likely lick a stranger to death, however, their bark is impressive.

They are sometimes referred to as "pocket dogs", as they like to follow their humans very closely (i.e. back pocket pals) and need lots of human contact.

This is an all around dog, basically everything you need. Very intelligent dog, good with kids (grew up with one named Julie), guard dog and made to work.

The Bermies Mountain Dog is a wonderful dog. They are very big and gentle they are great with any one and any thing. They are also a very beautiful animal.

I would have to go with Lins-Star and vote for the Dobie    . And no, everyone here is not bias to their breed   .
You will get votes for Pits from the pit lovers, Boxers for the boxer lovers and so on.
