Guest Anonymous Posted July 14, 2002 Posted July 14, 2002 Last week an horrific incident happened 3 miles from where I live, a weim was savaged to death by 3 French mastiffs. The owner of the weim was walking passed through a right of way footpath past the house which is in a rural location as far as I am aware the dog did not go on the persons land but stayed on the footpath. The mastiffs were loose and came from know where and set upon the weim, the lady owner and her 14 year old son watched as the dogs mauled and savaged their dog. A farm worker who worked for the man with the mastiffs came to help, he apparantly was bitten in the frenzie and collasped. The lady dialed 999. In a last ditched attempt to save her dog she tried to throw her into the pond to get the dogs off. The details and extent of the injuries were horiffic. I have been told the owner then came out and shouted his dogs in and did'nt even apologise. I don,t know if the vet had to put her to sleep or she died during the assault. The Police arrived very quickly but it was to late. The Farm worker was taken by ambulance to hospital. In the local paper today the owner of the mastiffs states that he apologied to the weims family but the weim came onto his land unleashed and so was "an uncontrollable dog". This is not the first instance relating to these dogs and their threatening behaviour. The Police are investiagting the matter. What are the laws regarding this? Quote
Guest roo Posted July 14, 2002 Posted July 14, 2002 You are in the UK i take it? By what dogs do you mean french mastiff? Dogue de bordeux? If the other dogs were the ones that attacked , as the law says out of control in a public place, then they were the ones out of control, the owner of the killed dog will have to go for it against the other owners dogs, she and the farmer are the only witnesses here. In a public place is a bit of an odd one in the uk, a man was driving in his car a few years ago with his dog who was apparently of pit bull type ( a great dane staffy cross) and a police man saw his dog was not muzzled, it was removed from the owner, the courts deemed the mans car a public place. A st Bernard was recently taken under the DDA for nipping a policeman in his own garden, the policeman was told to stop as the dog was out, the pliceman ignored the signs and the owner, guess wht ? the dog was out of control in a public place again. Try to find a website on the dangerous dog act. What an awful thing to have happened, i have not read about it anywhere. Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted July 14, 2002 Posted July 14, 2002 That is one of the worst things I have ever heard. I cannot help you as far as the laws go, but every state has a web page, and usually you can find some very helpful information about laws. I cannot belive that the police have not done anything. Did anyone know which dog bit the farm worker? Did the police take his dogs away for quarentine? Has any action been taken? I have never heard of such a incedent. The best advise I can give you is to make sure that you never walk past that house. Those dogs may not be the major probelm here, it may be the owner, abuse, lack of training, and many other factors can change the behavior of a dog, and Mastiffs need to be well trained, and taken care of very well. They are such a large breed that training is such an important aspect of their lives. Quote
