I took off early from work today and went to the local humane society....always makes me so sad

There was a 9 year old lab mix that was logged in as a stray, as well as 3 pit bulls and a GSD/chow mix that were in "protective custody". My partner and I spent a bunch of time with the lab, he was so nice. We have decided that when we are rich and famous were going to buy a ton of land and visit shelters to adopt all the older dogs who seem to have no chance.

Of course I found an amazing red colored lab mix that I REALLY wanted to take home, but my boss just told us were moving in 1.5 months so it will just have to wait until I get settled again.

What makes me really  about all the "strays" out there is when you take them for a walk it's obvious they know what a leash is and most even know really basic commands like sit. So I have been laying awake at night thinking are all these dogs beloved family pets that have just gotten lost? Or is the unfortunate truth that these "stray" dogs are turned loose by unfeeling people who are too lazy to even drive the dogs to the pound? Probably some combination of the two, it's just when ever I visit the human society I get mad/sad. I don't mean to ramble on, but I just wish there was more I could do, but then I'm sure that I'm preaching to the choir.

Its sad isn't it. When I lived near the dog park I always walked by this house with the most gorgeous Lab/Boxer mix (?) that would bark at us, wagging its tail. A few weeks later a trip to the pound saw me standing infront of that very dog, looking at me with sad eyes saying "take me home, please", I told the man at the pound I knew this dog and told him where it lives, my heart sank when he told me the story, the owners had turned up at the pound with this dog, claiming it was a stray just so they didn't have to pay the surrender fee...
I cry as I write this, this dog was so nice and so cute and it may be dead now. I wanted to take him home so much, but with two other big dogs I simply couldnt afford him. How can people be so heartless? They also had two other dogs, it makes me wonder what happend to them

That is so sad. I hate how people will get a puppy thinking they can handle it and then they goto work and leave the puppy alone and they find the house trashed because he got bored or whatever....and then they get mad and throw the puppy outside....I always said to myself if Gizmo did anything while I was home taking a shower or cooking or somerthing...SHES A PUPPY...thats what my dad does now also...he doesn't mind at all.....

No one will ever see one of my dogs in the pound/shelter.....unless she/he gets lost and I'm on myway to pick him/her up!

Hi Science Doc!

I also wanted to suggest another reason the pound puppies are often so well trained. My sister, Bridgette Chesne, is the director of the Boulder County Colorado Humane Society Shelter ( as distinguished from the director of fundraising - please donate anyway). They take each of the dogs through an intesive behavior modificatin and obedience regimen that transforms animals who were uncoltrollable into well mannered animals who sit to meet new people, don't jump on anyone, an walk at heal consistently. They find this dramatically increases the dog's chances of being adopted. Many of the dogs are surrendered for behavioral issues that they are able to corrected before the dog leaves for a new, more permanent, home.

Most people couldn't be bothered, not to mention nobody wants to admit that their dog was too much to handle. Yes, they are mean people, but some people lack what we call a heart :(

I can't believe people can be so mean!!
My 6 month old Golden Retriever was owned by a very sweet man who took care of her and NEVER neglected her! When he had to go and live in the UK with the rest of his family for 3 months he had to do something very hard for him, he had to give his beloved dog away. But he DIDN'T take her to the humane society or the pound, he was responsible owner and went looking for an owner for her, and there he found my family and now we have a new addition to the family! Imagine what would have happened if he took her to the pound? I wouldnt have my lovely "best friend"! ALL DOGS DESERVE A CHANCE TO FIND LOVING HOMES! :x What I think should happen is before anyone considers of getting a dog, they should either: 1. Get a goldfish and see if they could take care of it. If not, do NOT get a dog!. Or 2. Get an AIBO, the robot dog wich thinks and acts EXACTLY like a dog. If they take care of THAT and DON'T find it much trouble then they can get a dog. This could save many innocent dogs from bad and unloving homes!

Anyway better get going before I write a full book! See ya!

People often have no time no money and no skills for rehoming a dog or even of finding a lost dog.
Many shelters require a leave off fee of owners and there are lots of people who own pets who just don't want to spend more money they don't have on a dog that doesn't suit them  not to mention the costs of redeeming a dog that is impounded is beyond the means of some owners.
Many more people think the shelter is a great place for a homeless dog to find a new owner and never realize that many shelters must kill unwanted animals daily.
Some people abandon a sick dog hoping a new owner will be able to pay the vet fees for a beloved pet that they just cannot handle.
Some people are just ignorant and callous.
I've seen all that and more - the reasons are as varied as the people and often extremely tragic for all concerned. Thinking there is a single cause is a bit simplistic and leads to non productive anger instead of saving a pet.
