Hi! I adopted a border collie from my local animal control about a month and a half ago. He's only 35 pounds and I love him to death! I'm having a constant problem though...ok, he's an inside dog, but when I take him outside into our pen (just your normal sized chain-link fence), he jumps it. He even does this when I'm out there with him!! I have a golden retriever and they get along well, so he does have a buddy. I have tried EVERYTHING!! Any ideas on how I can keep him from jumping? He has proven that he can jump fences at least as high as 6 feet. Nothing is too tall for him! Thanks in advance! Allyson

This is probably why he ended up in the local animal shelter. Unfortunately, dogs stay in a pen because they want to ---- he doesn't want too.

Is there anyway to put a top on the fence? Or put up an electric fence (pet strength only) around the top.

You are probably going to hear lots of people say....send him to obedience school. This will do nothing to stop this behaviour. He knows he can jump the fence and he doesn't want to stay in the pen.

Exercise him more, take him to training classes to give his clever little mind and body something to do - agility class comes to mind :D !
If he is hitting the fence and climbing it to get over then an overhang might solve the problem - you take a non climbable wire and put 18-24 inches sloping IN towards the pen and either up at about a 45 degree or straight in at about a 90 degree angle and that should keep the dog from making it out of the pen.
If you cannot do that this is one type of case where an invisible fence system might help by keeping him from approaching the real fence to jump it due to the shock :( he will get.
