APBT-Banned/muzzled/any left.....?

Hi
If there's one thing that comes across browsing the forums here its that there are loads of pit bull owners and lovers out there (and the occasional *%X!*^$> who thinks they are wonderful as fighting dogs... ) I have been really intrigued by all the accounts- the thing is, I have never, ever seen one! I live in the UK, not long ago we had the 'dangerous dogs act' implicated and I believe it was made illegal to breed these dogs, for them to be out in public without a muzzle on pain of death (for the dog of course) etc. I think the whole thing would have given most American readers the shivers- I am sure I remember one young female APBT was taken away from her family and put down, because she was out with a child on a hot day and the child took off her muzzle to allow her to drink..
What I would like to know is, does anyone know;
Are there any APBTs at all left in the UK?
Has anything along these lines (DOG ACT) been carried out in the USA?
What proportion of dog attacks (on people of course) have actually been conclusively traced to the NON-FIGHTING APBT? From what I can remember when the act came about, there had been a series of attacks, one of which involved an APBT, but others by Akitas and Rottweilers. The pit bull really got the rap for it. :(
They seem such sweet dogs, remind me a bit of my aunties little staffies... I believe that many dogs like rotties, APBTs and Akitas, are just bought for the wrong reason by the wrong owner. They are NOT STATUS SYMBOLS. I also believe that it is a mistake for ANY ordinary member of the public to teach their dog to be aggressive- many dogs already have a strong guarding instinct (and the means to enforce it!) we need not encourage this for the safety of ourselves or our property.

many APBT's,Staffs,Rotties,Dobies,Akita's ect. are good, friendly if slightly protective dogs but they are being mis-used and badly brought up by the wrong people who are using them as you say for status symbols and for protection(sad ^&%$*&!*)

you are right also we don't need a dog to protect us or our property that is our job... the dog is there to warn us of the intrusion nothing more..if there is an intruder in my house he/they will have 2 armed adults to deal with nothing more ...let someone challenge my mothering protective instincts !!!!!

k and Louis you both are so right! This is my fav. K! They are 80% of the time brought up wrong and those are the poor bully breed and other breeds that get this rap of the killing babys thing....But it is true as indivdual owners we cant do anything really except train, desex and prove that our loving companions are trained and safe.....

The Dangerous dogs act doesn't seem to have made one iota of difference anyway- I think a couple of weeks ago 2 kids were attacked on the same day, one by an Akita, the other by ???????? 2 cross breeds ???- I don't know. What's the answer now? They can't go on eliminating breed by breed. The pibull wasn't helped in the least by an 'animal loving' magazine. I recall their feature stating that these dogs were not suitable as pets and that no one but macho 'fighting' men could want to own them. All this next to a black and white photo of a very lean and fed up looking APBT which appeared run-up and mean... Strong contrast to the messages I read and photos I see at this forum. Its a shame, I just keep thinking how cute these guys are, and how I will never have the option to own one!
The same magazine attacked the 'Bandog' but I don't remember much about the article- anyone know what a Bandog is? :-?

BanDog...nope not here! But how could the APBT be mean.....look to the picture to the left!...I'll tell you, when they come home the owner starts off and ties them in to the backyard...grassless, shelterless, waterless, food whats that?!?!?, then they go out there and beat them till the dog actually starts growling and defending themselves...then they might get a scrap of food....this goes on and on and on and on then they actually get to the "pit" and they go and kill their own kind....over and over until they get killed or the animal control comes and collects them and then in 99% of the time they are sent to the vets and "Die Peacfully". That is how this breed and any other breed become MEAN......

It must be a horrible life, I think they would rather be homeless.....at least they dont get beaten....

It is all the fault of a bunch or ignorant buttheads who decided to show they were tough by letting dogs fight. That is so rude. Dogs are the sweetest most loveable beings on the face of this earth. Normally I can get along better with McKenzie than I can the people I live with. When I got McKenzie my parents asked me what she was shen they found out she was part pitbull they went all to pieces. I have a 3 year old and they were absolutley scared to death that McKenzie might turn on her. So I made them come to my house one day to meet McKenzie. When my dad seen her and seen how calm she was he was shocked. My parents couldn't believe that I had her housebroke and trained to sit, laydown, and give five. She was only about 12 weeks old. They changed there tune quickly, but then dad heard on the news about a pit attacking his owner. WELL THE DOG WAS NOT AT FAULT. WITH PROPER TRAINING AND LOVE ANY DOG CAN BE A GREAT COMPAINION. Dogs are not bad they must be trained to be that way.

Yeah I saw it. They probaly cut it out because he was in a fight. He looks like he is about to attack. What is the point of fighting pits? And why did the guy get a dog whose father was a fighter?

Posted

Hi- when I put the link up I had only surfed around for a couple of minutes for a piccie for you guys, I had noticed the father described as a very 'game' pit bull which actually rung an alarm bell- something about the way it was stated- but I didn't have a lot of time on my hands so I hadn't scanned through everything.. Hope no one is offended and that my stance on dog fighting (VERY ANTI...!!) is still clear.. :o

Here is a site with a lot more pics.

So why is it the people on this forum are particularly fascinated with dogs designed to kill people? That is what the bandog is for and what it was created as - a person killer - drug dealers in particular like this mix
I would think responsible pitbull owners would not find this mixing of breeds to help continue their breed's killer image very attractive.

Ouch.. I wouldn't say I was interested in it that way... :o
It was mentioned way back in a mag I read long time ago, couldn't remember what it looked like, that's all, I was curious... Again.. ouch!

GUEST: we are NOT Breed Specific....Tell me what was the Pitbull bred for tell me I really would like you to tell me! Dog Fighting yes you are correct....Now they can bred for it and that does NOT mean they will grow up to do what they were bred for...DUH.....my gizmo is so spoiled she doesn't even know what a "fighting pit" is. If she was ever put into one...she wouldn't know what to do...she would just wag her tail...

Now do you understand.....probably not..but your not us...so

I mean- its not the DOGS fault that these people want them and are going to train them for that is it? :-?

No but these dogs are not designed as pets they are designed as man dogs. Dogs do tend to turn out as they are genetically programmed to be.
Just as pitbulls are designed to dog fight and proper members of the breed will do so if given the opportunity as they are genetically predisposed to doing it. Same as beagles are designed to track prey or sighthounds to chase moving objects. The whole point of most breeds is their in bred working characteristics whether or not we today like the purposes for which the dogs were initially designed.
Dogs come with genetic predispositions and thinking that training alone can make all dogs be like a nice temperament golden retriever is evidence of misunderstanding of what dog breeds are about.
In the US we do tend to take the hard or sharp edges in temperament out of a breed as the pet owners in general do not mostly know how to properly handle a true working dog. Then people go and mix lousy temperament dogs to create dogs that will literally kill people as their 'job'.
Dogs breeds differ in temperament and abilities as a part of their design and individual dogs within a breed can also be a variant on the norm for their breed.
Thinking all dogs are exactly the same except for their size and coat color etc is what gets so many pet owners in so much trouble for selecting the wrong breed for them.
Bandogs would come under the heading of 'wrong breed' for most normal homes particularly those with not much dog handling and training experience.
