Guest Anonymous Posted July 2, 2002 Posted July 2, 2002 Posted: 02 Jul 2002 17:53 Post subject: one puppy dead.. help? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I'm at work and there are stray dogs all around. One had puppies a couple of weeks ago. I didn't know until just now. There was a dead puppy in the parking lot and one other. I asked the security guard and he said the mother has been carrying them around. I buried the dead one and moved the live one out of the parking lot. There is only one left that I know of alive. He is very young. Can't move yet and his eyes are barely open. What should I do? The mother is still around but is a stray. I'm not sure if she is still feeding her puppy. He doesn't look too skinny. I'm not sure if the dead one was run over or died of other causes Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted July 2, 2002 Posted July 2, 2002 Ok this is just my opition. TAKE THE DOG AND THE PUPS HOME! I would then take them to the vet and get all their shots and stuff. Then take the momma home with her pup and nurse them back to the best health possible. Then try and place them in a good home or a rescuse.. or even to the pound as your last resort if you can not keep them. At least at the pound they get feed and water. That is really sad that there are that many strays. This is just what I would do. I have found many strays and taken them home nursed them to good health and placed them in homes. Once I found a batch of kittens barely alive maybe 3 weeks if that. I found them under a dock by the river. They were soaking wet, had ring worm, had been eating seaweed to stay alive. I got them meds and got them all back to great health and placed them in homes where the lived happily ever after! Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted July 3, 2002 Posted July 3, 2002 There are 100s of strays all around and I can't take them all home with me. It's heart breaking. I didn't want the mother to reject her puppy. Where I work there are about 10 to 15 strays all ages. Some people feed them. I can't take another dog home with me since I already have one puppy. If I take home 2 more I will surely get evicted. They don't have a pound here. There is a group for the Jamaica Society For The Prevention Of Cruelty To Animals Ltd but no one really adopts them and they end up being killed. I was hoping to try to make sure the puppy is save and fed, but wasn't sure how to go about it. If I was in the U.S. I would do exactly what you advised and have done that in the past. But I'm dealing with a diff situation here. Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted July 3, 2002 Posted July 3, 2002 Oh my gosh.. that is so sad! I forgot you din't live in the US. I have no idea then what to do. Maybe bring the momma some food?? Or did you say she rejected the pup. I don't have any advice for you.. sorry. Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted July 3, 2002 Posted July 3, 2002 Well, there isn't a whole lot you really can do. If you try to feed them, then you end up feeding the whole gang. If worse comes to worse, take the puppy home and bottle feed it puppy replacement milk. I would only suggest this if the mother has flat out rejected the pup, or isn't nursing it near enough. Though, she may not be nursing it much because she isn't getting enough nutrition. It's a vicious cycle. Another thought, if the pup doesn't live, see if you can get a hold of the momma dog (if she lets you) and find a reasonable place to spay her. I know it's hard if the finances are avaliable, but perhaps some vets will be willing to do it for no or little charge. Always spay your females first. You can have as many males nuetered as you want, but there will always be one extra that gets all the females pregnant. Tis' a tough situation. Just gotta do what you can. Best of luck! Guest Anonymous Posted July 4, 2002 Posted July 4, 2002 thanks for the advice. I haven't been able to find the puppy or the mother so I'm not sure what has happened. Will look again later. What I find very interesting here is that 95% of the jamaican people I talk to thinks neutering is very mean. But I say to them I think it is worst to have so many dogs starving, getting run over, etc. THey think it is cruel b/c they think they should be able to have sex.... I've never thought of it that way and have asked quite a few people how they felt about it. And no matter how much they tell me they don't like dogs they don't think they should be fixed! It's so strange to me. It's also that people don't want to spend the money of fixing their dogs much less stray dogs. One good thing is that the Jamaica Society For The Prevention Of Cruelty To Animals Ltd fixes all dogs that are adopted... if they are adopted. Quote
