one puppy dead.. help?

I'm at work and there are stray dogs all around. One had puppies a couple of weeks ago. I didn't know until just now. There was a dead puppy in the parking lot and one other. I asked the security guard and he said the mother has been carrying them around. I buried the dead one and moved the live one out of the parking lot.

There is only one left that I know of alive. He is very young. Can't move yet and his eyes are barely open. What should I do? The mother is still around but is a stray. I'm not sure if she is still feeding her puppy. He doesn't look too skinny.

Any advice?

you can go to the vet and get a formula and try to bottle feed it. bring the pup with you and have the vet (or vet tech) and have him/her show you how to care for it, be sure to ask how to stimulate it to make it go to the bathroom, you have to do this for the very young ones.

I have bottle feed puppies before for a breeder and learned how to stimulate it to make it go to the bathroom.

So you think I should take it away from it's mother?

That is so sad....Hopefully you can bottle feed it and it will be healthy...

I am not an expert on dogs but I think that it is probably best if you do try and raise the pup yourself or give it to someone else to do so- you are only going to put yourself through endless worry if you try and get it back to mom and you can't be sure if she took it back and cared for it.. And life is probably such a struggle for her anyway, probably better for her not to be trying to feed the young one when she needs all the energy she can get for herself. There may be others of the litter tucked away in safety somewhere that she has to cope with, and if so I doubt she'll be really missing this one lost puppy.... But like I say I am no expert... what are you leaning towards?

Last night I checked on the puppy and mom. I found them. The puppy was nursing so I left them alone. I'm keeping tabs on them everyday and giving them food and water. I am asking around to see if someone wants a puppy.

Thanks!

what kind of dog is it? Is it a big dog? I would suggest trying to find someone to take care of it if you cant yourself...how old do you think the pup is? Maybe you could keep an eye on it or keep it until it is about 7 or 8 weeks and find a home for it. Good luck!!

Abu. that is wonderful news about the pup and it is brilliant that you are keeping a watchful eye on him and his mum, that relieves just about every concern I had about the mother's health.. You are a good person to care about them, thousands wouldn't... :(

I'm really concerned that no one is concerned about this poor stray mother. An animal rescue group or shelter or pound should be called to pick up both. Yes, if it's a kill shelter, there' s a chance the adult could be PTS, but is that any more cruel than her running the streets, scrounging for food, being tortured or left lying in pain after being hit by a car. She's probably no more than a pup herself. IMO, not calling to have them picked up is cruel. I know you are being kind, and I'm not directing my anger toward you, but I never leave a stray. I either try to get it in my car and bring it home or I take it to a shelter and keep checking on it. Please don't leave her to fend for herself.

Guest, you obviously don't understand the situation here in Jamaica.... There are NO rescue groups or shelters or pounds. OK there is one pound but the dog will be put to sleep. I've been there I was the only one there looking for a dog. There are 100s of strays everywhere. I live in Kingston, Jamaica. I can't pick up all of them and I don't think I want to. They live like wild animals here. No one here is going to adopt an adult mongrel, so they would definately be putting them to sleep if I take them to the pound.

You are definitely in a situation where one of the questions you need to ask yourself is will you be doing the animal any favors if you help it live to grow up  Not an easy position to be in. *Maybe* if the pup lives to be weaned you can find someone to take it in but most likely that means the pup will be out on the street sooner or later also reproducing.
IMO what the several islands that seem to be in this situation really need are strong spay neuter campaigns to eliminate the free breeding and bring the feral dog populations under control in that manner.

I've talked about the situation with several people here and the feeling is that spaying and neutering is cruel... which I definately don't agree with. It's kind of strange but most people seem to hate dogs but feel that they should be able to enjoy having sex. Sex is such a big part of the culture... not that it's not important in every society it's just different than the states

I never thought of spaying a dog as being cruel and I never really thought of my dogs sex life. But every person I have asked about it so far has had the same reaction that they don't believe in spaying their dogs. I thought it is ironic that one minute they are talking about how they hate dogs and the next they don't want to deprive them of sex!!!

Anyway, when I visited greece I found out that every year they shot a lot of the stray animals to help control the problem... which isn't a permanent solution.

I'm sorry, I didn't observe the area from which you posted. I'm sorry to learn the mindset of the people native to Jamaica. It makes you wonder how they treat each other. I am not a big advocate of mass euthanasia, but it would certainly seem to me that dogs that are hated and dogs that are thought should be able to have free sex, allowed to roam the streets foraging for food, starve to death, be mistreated, etc. are certainly better off being euthanized than left to lead a miserable cruel life bringing more dogs into this lifestyle.

Since Kingston is a resort visited by many Americans and Europeans who love their animals, I would think that making these visitors aware of the horrible life of animals in Jamaica might be a way of starting to make a better life for animals there. If the Americans & Europeans who love animals stop bringing their money there because of it, maybe the situation may in time be remedied somewhat.

Guest,

When I was talking to a friend of mine she made me really think... when I asked her why people don't take better care of their dogs She said she can't think about feeding the dog when she can't feed her children.

It made me understand the situation here a little better. You're idea is a thought but there are so many people hungry here I'm not about to do anything that will hurt their economy anymore. Tourism is way down already because of September 11th. Americans are lucky to have the ability to care for our dogs the way we do. Dogs are treated better in the states then some children here and in other 3rd world countries.

I don't think hurting the economy here is the solution. I think that if people had more money to care for their dogs and people were more educated that would help the problem. I am doing what I can by helping the dogs I can and help the economy. I work in e-business which help Jamaican companies sell globally so I'm doing what I can.

Of course, it's the corruptness in the Jamaican gov't. Their families all eat and dress well, but it's all kept right in that circle. The gov't. benefits from the tourist trade is what I meant and once the so called big wigs don't have the money coming in, there can be turn arounds. It's not just Americans who love their animals (dogs). England, France and Germany (especially France) are as dog oriented as any countries. Actually, Egypt is full of unwanted, starving, and abandoned dogs.

Your heart is in the right place, and I'm sure you are a very kind person who is trying to do the best that one person can do. I wish you luck. I wish you good will and good luck.

Why dont you try to raise money towards these poor dogs, see if you can get a vet involed, see if you can get someone with money to help back it,see if you can try to educate the people, it would all be really hard work, but if you could get something up and running that way the future may look bright,(tourists are always feeling soooo sorry for the strays)
a neutering rehomeing program would be an excellent start.

guest: i have been thinking about trying to raise money, etc. and have gone to the Jamaica Society For The Prevention Of Cruelty To Animals Ltd to see what I can do. I've only been here a few months working so right now I'm making sure I don't become homeless and have enough to eat.

I've been to over 20 countries and have seen the stray problem all over the world. Egypt does have many strays and I also saw starving horses. I was disgusted when I was riding a horse around the pyramids and found a dead colt in a ditch rotting that was out of sight from most tourists. It's a problem everywhere just different levels.

I lived in France for a while and noticed that they had a campaign against abondoning your dogs on vacation. I thought that was strange but after looking into it I found out that many people take their dogs with them instead of paying to have them boarded and get frustrated with them and leave them on the side of the road. In France there are dog lovers but many use dogs as status symbols and actually don't treat them very well. Many pull their dogs up by the neck to get them on the bus with them... I saw that many times and didn't see how they didn't break those little dogs necks.

Anyway.... I agree with what you're saying about the few getting the $$$. The gov't has some corruption.
