I have adopted a puppy GSD from a rescue centre he is now 4 months old, he has a wonderful temperment, great with the kids and i cannot fault him in any way. My question is how on earth do i get him to bark when some one knocks at my door? he looks at it and even approaches the door but when i go to open it he runs off and hides.

Your GSD is still a puppy. Give him time. He will bark.

Of course one of us (I think K?? Don't quite remember) barks for her dogs when someone comes to the door!! :P But Nikki is right give your dog time! Be prepared though you might have a heart attack the first time he or she does bark for someone at the door!!

Sounds like you have a correct temperament pup if it was barking and acting aggressive at the door at this age I would be really worried for you and what lies ahead as the dog matured!
Pups this age should take a 'back seat' to the adults who are supposed to be handling the situation - that means you right now :)
As your pup matures and becomes a more adult member of the pack it should come to bark to alert you to someone coming.
I strongly suggest obedience training - nothing more impressive than a trained dog to a stranger! If your dog does everything you ask it to no one will question you if you say he will be protective on command - a command you do not use lightly I might add :-) so no demo is possible :-)
If your dog matures and does not bark still then I would say you might want to board the dog for a couple of days in a kennel - usually all the dogs learn to bark when anyone comes in the door there and bring that knowledge on home - but its a blessing to have a dog that does NOT make an out of control ruckus at the door - lots of people seek trainers to help them curb that :-)

Absolutly Natural! Gizmo never barked at the door...she was just use to people just walking in! Long story.... but if you have someone ring the door bell and knock....just bark like k does and I think he/sje will get it..Give it time! Good Luck!
