Rex tried to eat a Toad

:o Help - Rex tried to eat a Toad. He dropped it when he was told and it ran away. But he started to have foam come out of his mouth. We wash his mouth out with water which he didn't like.

He seems alright but he did bring up a little bit. I phoned the Vet but I can't afford $98.00 just to look. Do you think He will be OK??

If I were you I'd look for a cheeper vet... of course that might mean cheeper service! If not, call around to see if anyone will give advice...
My advice is to monitor behavior, make sure your dog gets lots of water. I don't know alot about toads in that area, but most toads do have poison glands that will secreat when the animal is stressed (like when being attacked by a dog) It will most matter how much the dog ingested and how poisonous the toad was.
Good luck and keep us posted!

Thanks - I am watching him. I do have PetCare Insurance on him but I don't have the $$ ahead. I'm trying to find a Vet that will treat and wait for the cheque from the insurance company. I've asked around at the leash free park I go to but haven't had anyone know of one. This is a big city though.

Most dogs learn to only do this once :-)
Based on where you live I don't think you need to worry - only in the southern US area are some of the toads really dangerously toxic
The foaming is a normal reaction to the YUCKY stuff the toads give off when something grabs them and rinsing the mouth was perfect :-)
He should be feeling better already by this post :-)

My oldest Lab use to do this and have the exact same reaction!! Needless to say he never stopped doing it!! :P Although he would paw at them awhile before putting them in his mouth..maybe trying to wipe the taste off... :D :D He would just shake his head revolted by the awful taste!! Gotta love my Labbies!!!!

:P Thanks "Guest" you were right. I've been watching Rex and he seems just fine. Your right there are no toxic toads in Toronto.

I'm going to start looking for a Vet that will maybe co-sign with my PetCare insurance. Some said that they heard that some Vet's will.

Thank you everyone for your help. It really help me cope. :D

Oh, Lordy! Our southern bred frogs are poisonous?! Eeeek! One of my dogs mauls them all the time. Our property is overrun with frogs (I'm not a frog-ologist and have no idea what all kinds we have except tree frogs) and my Penny, though I don't think she actually consumes them, does maul them and toss them around. YUCK! Thanks for nothing, guest! You should know by now that any time I read of some other type of danger, the laws of nature demand that it befall my household. Therefore, I expect my Penny to become horribly ill any day from "frog-o-toxo-lick-em-osis" and it will all be YOUR fault! You have cursed me. Cursed, I say!

the only toxic american toad I know of is the texas bufo toad. all the other toads I've ever met excrete a poison that tastes awful and will make a dog sick to his or her stomach to discourage them from toad eating ever again. some dogs never learn. also, they do foam, it's natural after toad eating.

There is an exotic escaped toad in the southern US that is nasty I forget the name of it.
Frogs are usually no problem its the toads that are icky. Toads have such beautiful eyes :-) and the warts are part camoflage so they look like dirt and part glands (the big ones up by the head) to give off 'I do not taste good' chemicals.
