Guest Anonymous Posted June 23, 2002 Posted June 23, 2002 I have an 11 year old shar pei & 3 weeks ago she started having diarrhea and vomiting which still hasn't stopped.I got her into the vet & he ran blood work on her & found out her kidneys are failing her.She had lost 8 lbs.since her last visit there 2 months ago.Has lost another 5 with in the last week. She refuses dog food now.Vet told me to feed her whatever I can to get her to eat.Which has been a little bit of ground chuck, hotdogs, ect. But she can't digest it & she vomits it up.Thing is, she still has her perkiness & wags her tail and still knows who we are.She just can't be feeling good & basically starving herself. The vet said to play it day by day.She has only eaten twice in the last 4 days & isn't keeping it down. So, is it time to put her down, or wait til she is weeker & lethargic? Any opions I would appreciate. Thank you, Keeshasmom Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted June 23, 2002 Posted June 23, 2002 I went through the exact same thing last november with my border collie (the one in the pic). He began to vomit and became very thin. After a four day battle as the vets tried to same him, we just knew it was time to let him find peace. He was in alot of pain though still happy when we came to see him. To us, it was about quality of life, not quatity. And so placing the pain apon ourselves, and taking it from him, we had him humanely euthanized. It was very tragic since he was my first border collie, but I could nolonger bear to watch him suffering and withering away before me. I just have a little advice to offer. Follow your heart. You will know when it is time. Very sincere reguards~ Lafayette Quote
GizmoRedNosePit Posted June 24, 2002 Posted June 24, 2002 I am severly sorry with this....But yes, follow your heart...you heart can lead you in many diffrent ways in life but I think you heart will know.... Need anyone to talk to just ask and we will help Quote
Guest roo Posted June 24, 2002 Posted June 24, 2002 I lost a dane from kidneys, she went through the vomiting, the drinking, then one day, started to bring up huge blood clots, it looked just like bits of liver, the vets took her in put her on a drip, gave her anti sickness jabs, she still continued to go down hill, still continued to vomit. She was my everything, both my husband and myself decided enough was enough, we rushed up to the vets and let her go, she went so peacefully, the vet injected into the drip so not as to distress her anymore. I always say we only keep them going for ourselves, if her quality of life is not as it should be then we should let them go to the rainbow bridge, to be young and all better again, Yes follow your heart, but utmost forget your pain, think of hers. Guest Anonymous Posted June 24, 2002 Posted June 24, 2002 I agree that it's quality not quantity.... I also agree that there is nothing harder in the world then putting your dog to sleep. Our last dog was hit by a car after a futile visit to the vet we took her home in hopes of recovery, which never happend. So we took her to the vet I used to work at and they said there really wasn't anything to be done but to put her out of her misery. I took our boys out while my husband stayed with her. When our vet came out she was crying... I have never seen her cry like that. My husband was so upset that he sat in the room with Koko for about 15 min before he was able to come out. I had never seen him so upset. I think it was the hardest thing for him to do, but for the dog's sake it was worth it. If you feel your dog is suffering then it might be time, just remember the last posts and go with your heart! And good luck... I am so sorry  Quote

Kidney failure from Shar Pei fever is not comfortable for the dog with the toxin build ups in the blood etc. I suggest a visit to www.petloss.com and as you cannot provide a cure please provide the last comfort your dog will need from you. Guest Anonymous Posted June 25, 2002 Posted June 25, 2002  Sunday she started shaking a little and into Monday a little. She seemed to be worse, so I called the vet and made the appt.to have her put down.We made the appt.the last one of the day so no one else would be there. My mom went with me as she has gone thru this many times.I held her head in my arms and said my good byes, then she was gone.It was so very hard and I balled.I know it was for the best and I didn't wait til she was in too much pain.I now have her burried in the back yard near one of her favorite spots & even tossed in a few of her doggie treats she loved so much. We put up an angel, cross and some flowers.I also put a chair back there for me to go visit her & sit with her. Thank you all so much and for your storys you shared with me. Keeshasmom Quote
