My labs are the same way. They love the snow. I have a hard time keeping them in the house. I see nothing wrong with dogs being outside dogs as long as they have an appropriate shelter. And on that note appropriate shelter does not have to run a person $2500. People are capable of building a sherlter for much less. Don't let anyone scare you into thinking you are not providing for your pets the way you should. I know everyone would love to have their dogs in the house with them but sometimes it is not possible.

Breeders with 20-25 dogs definately do not let every dog in their home but do have heated and cooled kennels for the dogs. snip:

You are quite incorrect you know  breeders with that many dogs certainly often do have the dogs living in the house and the ones with the kennels have ipso facto too many dogs IMO.
I'm sorry the mother of the kid with the beagles is teaching her child how to be callously cruel to her pets. :( I know the kid loves mom and so wants to defend her but a cement floored shed is not a place I'd ever let a dog of mine live.
Dogs are pets in most cases nowadays - pets don't live outdoors like the livestock does IMO.

Ok first off it is not a cement floor. Secound its not animal abuse. Or cruel whatever. Even if my dogs were allowed to come inside I highly doubt that they would for most of the time. I spend a lot of time at my best friends house and they have a doggie door that my dogs can go in and out of, well they have the choice but they still perfer to stay outdoors. And since they are NOT your dogs then don't wory about them. They are my dogs. My outdoor dogs.

This may not help you at all. Most of the working breeds werre bred to be out in the cold so they cant get enough of being outside. The shorthaired breeds love the summer because it is so cold inside. my male Black Norwegian Elkhound cant get enough of either, when he wants in all he has to do is jump on the patio. When itis cold snowy or not he cant stand it inside because of the heater. i have never made my elkhound a outside dog yet he chooses to be out there most of the dog. Around 8 o'clock in the morning he asks to be let out and then only wants to be let in at 5 or 6 o'clock like i said this probably wont help you but maybe your dogs like it outside. By the way what kind is he/she.

You are the one that said it had a cement floor your dogs love to lie on.
Thanks for proving my point about what your parents are teaching you in terms of callousness for other living beings by making you keep the dogs as outdoor dogs. Adult dogs always prefer what they know best over the unknown - the fact that your dogs don't know about being inside does not mean they prefer to be outside.
For some opinions other than mine or your parents check out:

this is the only type of outdoor dog IMO though I do agree working livestock dogs should be in the same shelter as their pack the livestock is - they are not human companions but livestock companions.

Ok..go back and re-read the post! I said that my sibe streches out on the cold concrete. I ment the big slab of concrete that we have right by our house. I NEVER said that the shed was concrete. There people go again assuming things! And since they are not your dogs just let my dogs and my business be mine!

You came here with the description of the situation in a thread on getting dogs inside and out of the cold - did you expect praise for keeping your dogs outside?
Its obvious they aren't my dogs - as my dogs live inside with the people and go out for fun and potty trips - I don't need to take my dogs to stores in the winter to warm them up...
Oh well teenagers never listen to what is really being said anyway.

Aurora, I'm sorry your mom feels this way. There are very few breeds that want or should stay outdoors. I've owned boxers all my life, and while I don't pretend to know everything, I do know that boxers do not belong outside. They are short haired dogs who are extremely sensitive to cold and heat. Being a short nosed dog the heat is extremely hard on them. Get your mom some books to read on boxers and your other dog and dogs in general and see if you can persuade her and your dad that it is cruel to keep these dogs outside all the time and to bring them into the sunroom where there is nothing warm for them to lie down on the floor. Can you buy them dog beds or blankets?

Will everyone look up their states animal cruelty laws and see what it says? If I am right and I know for most states it does not REQUIRE a soft bed or hay or heat or a fan or anything..Adequate shelter is all. I am not saying that is what it should be but that is what it is.. Beagle I feel is taking care of her dog extremely well..why not ask someone who has packs of beagles where they keep there dogs in the winter? And summer? By packs I mean 10-15 and yes people have that many! I have seen animal shelters with less shelter than the 'shed' Beagle has!

Just for reference were did dogs stay before people let them in houses?

Ok I am not going to even bother with rude people like you. Then if you realize they are my dogs then keep your big butt out of it ok! If you are really that concerned then I will give you my moms email address so you can babble your nonsence to her. And no I did not ask for praise, read the title of this post.. or should I say it for you? Its says help me convince! I also need help convincing. So that is why I posted but instead of me getting help I get slammed in the face with extremely rude posts from you and nicki. I have even been called an animal abusser. That to me is very rude. I would not be here if I hated animals. I will no longer deal with you rude people. I do not make the rules in my house therefore I cannot and willnot tell my mother what to do. So do not come to me and tell me how you think I am abbusing my animals by keeping them outside.

One more thibg guest. This goes to your rude commet about teenegers. I guess you were one some point in your life also so you should be able to relate to me but you can't so I am wondering what you were like at that age. And once again you assumed that all teenegers don't listen... well I do. So get off the bithch'in train because you are the only one on it.

Guest do you own your home? Do you make the rules at your home?

If so I see a very big difference between you and Beagle.. She does not make the rules in her house, her mother and father do. Would you have went against your parents and their rules while under their roof. Or better yet told her that them they were teaching you to be "callous and cruel to living things"? I think not. The comment teenagers never listen was not needed but then I will say some teenagers never listen because of the way adults talk to them and if you will read all of your previous post to Beagle you will see why she is no longer listening to you. Therefore maybe if you change the way you approach a subject with someone the outcome might be a little different but until then I expect the same type of response. :-?
I will say at least she pays for vet visits and etc...How many teenagers do that? Not too many.... Most animals would be in a shelter..
Beagle you have to learn to overlook some responses or look past them..

Teenagers listen but if you talk to us like we are three years old and only have one brain cell then we say to ourselves "forget this loser of an adult" becuase we know we will be alive longer then the adults and we are the FUTURE....so if you would like your children to love what the world is then talk to them and ALL teenagers with respect, becuase the biggest bull crap rule in the world is "Listen and respect to your elders, well you know what I have allways broke that rule if they start talking to me WITHOUT respect" this is not ALL teenagers becuase I can tell you there is a little trouble maker teenager in this house and he doesn't EVER listen...SO to end this crap that teenagers dont listen......read above and you listen....we care but if you talk to us like we are little ants this is what we have to say , politly of course, unlike some adults, Bleep Off....and keep it off because we dont care, unless it is respectfully.

There is no authority that would sanction these dogs being left outside. All this talk about herding and working dogs doesn't even apply to the type of dogs we were discussing or conventional wisdom.

Beagle has a one year old beagle and a four year old mutt. The dog in the original post is not a boxer but a mutt. None of these dogs were ever considered to be working or herding dogs. These dogs are pets.

Even in beagle's case whereby she has an unheated shed, she stated that the temperature goes down to 17 degrees. With the wind chill factor, it would get much colder. 32 degrees is the freezing point. The temperature of an unheated shed is practically the same as the temperature outdoors.

And we are debatting whether this is adequate shelter for a little beagle? While I know it is pointless to attempt to convince these owners, the primary reason being their young age, I do not feel that it is very responsible for this forum to give the impression that keeping dogs outside in 17 degree weather is proper. This forum can have many readers who do not register or post and who could be fatally misguided by leaving such an impression.

Beagle what is the air temp in your "shed"? In the winter?

Guest Anonymous

I have no idea what the temp is in the shed. Its hotter in the shed though than outside. And it hasn't gotten that cold for a long time! I just ment that the coldest it has gotten that I remember was 17. They have fur coats people. Its not like hes naked.

I can really sympathyse with you. Even though it is summer here, i cant bear to make my dog stay outside! how many dogs do you have? I had two dalmations and they both slept together in one little dog house and wouldnt have it any other way. I think being together kept them warm. Consider getting them a doghouse and put warm bedding in it. They should be fine until you move out.

Thank you soo much for giving me advise and not being rude!! Yes I have like 4 doghouses that they can choose from. And then I go to goodwill and buy about 30 blankets for cheap and put them all over the shed and in the houses. I currently have two dogs. A beagle and a siberian husky/border collie mix. As soon as I move out they are coming inside with me!

This whole thing is really ridiculous. In the first place it was Aroura who stated:

it is getting very, very cold. I live at home with mum, so I don't make the rules with the dogs, so they are left stuck outside, freezing

By her posting that, she invited comments. But when she is told that she is right that her dogs should be kept inside because it is to cold, she gets defensive and says:

THEY ARE NOT FREEZING TO DEATH, THEY ARE JUST SHIVERING

Likewise, Beagle88 invited comments by stating:

So in the winter it gets at the coldest about 15 degrees. So my beagle is out almost frozen

In addition to her other comments that she is taking her dogs to stores to escape the cold.

Both of them made the initial statement that their dogs were freezing outside. They made that determination. But when other people agree with them and state their disapproval..they get mad and are justifying their dogs being left outdoors. That clearly doesn't make any sense.

and Jacsmom, you don't find these comments rude and uncalled for by Beagle88:

And since they are not your dogs just let my dogs and my business be mine!

Ok I am not going to even bother with rude people like you. Then if you realize they are my dogs then keep your big butt out of it ok!

I have even been called an animal abusser. That to me is very rude. I would not be here if I hated animals. I will no longer deal with you rude people

So do not come to me and tell me how you think I am abbusing my animals by keeping them outside.

So get off the bithch'in train because you are the only one on it.

And GizmoRedNosePit's comments concluding with:

Bleep Off....and keep it off because we dont care

These comments are rude and uncalled for. But you criticized the Guest's comment about teenagers not listening...and not any of their comments.

That is just as ridiculous as these two now justifying their dogs staying outside while they admit they are freezing.
