I just got my six month old Golden Retriever to start swimming in our pool, but he continuously drinks the salt water in it. Everytime he swims a lap he has his mouth open and his legs in the air as he snapps and drinks the water. I've yelled at him and slight punishment, but it only prevented him form drinking the salt water while not swimming. He used to drink out of teh pool while he was on the deck, but luckily he doesn't anymore. He just won't stop drinking and swimming. Eventually thsi will damage his kidnies. Does anyone have any advice on what to do to stop him from sucking up water. :-?

Keep him out of your pool area with a fence? Take him to freshwater for his swims? Fill the pool with fresh water not salt? Its not his fault he is in the pool or has access to the water...

I would suggest just keeping him far away from the pool. he is a golden...goldens love water. I take mine swimming at this out-of-the-way river that no one else goes to, and she likes to wade in up to her chest, hang her mouth open, and just swish her mouth through the water...she just adores the water.

sorry I don't have any suggestions but why is your pool filled with salt water. I have never heard of that. Is that common where you live?

Sashagirl, thank you very much for warning. My dog always drinks salt water, eats sand and something else and I haven't worried as so far.. We're lucky !
